New Waterford woman sentenced for her part in massage parlor human trafficking ring
WARREN — A Columbiana County woman nicknamed “Young Crazy” was among the defendants sentenced recently for human trafficking.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost announced the sentences Wednesday morning along with Mahoning County Sheriff Jerry Greene.
Young Sue Kim, of New Waterford, will not have to serve prison time in conjunction with the crime if she pays her $17,500 fine within the next 12 months. She had been sentenced to 66 months behind bars and also faces deportation.
Through plea agreements, the remaining defendants who included Tae Suk Hwang, of Saginaw, Michigan; Charles McGill, of Warren; Sunny Oh, of Palisades Park, N.J.; Miock Dong Schaffer of Norwalk; and Young Hee Yoon, also of Warren, received suspended prison sentences and will forfeit more than $332,000 in seized funds as well as individual fines between $17,500 and $37,500.
All the above listed defendants were between the ages of 57 and 69 years of age.
Young Hee Yoon also faces deportation.
“This group ran a cash-for-sex operation behind the facade of a massage parlor and tried to wire their illicit profits out of state,” Yost said. “Under the leadership of Sheriff Greene, our task force conducted a meticulous investigation, tracing funds and seizing key evidence to build an airtight case.”
The defendants, who entered guilty pleas in February, received the maximum sentences and fines, with their prison terms suspended if they pay the fines in the next 12 months.
The group operated a human trafficking ring that forced women into prostitution at two illicit massage parlors in Warren: the Tiger Spa and Sunny Spa. Indictments filed last year accused the defendants of confining women at the establishments. The investigation stemmed from March 2023 search warrants executed at the businesses as part of Operation Saving Daylight, which was a coordinated crackdown during which investigators seized large amounts of cash, financial assets and business records.
Two additional defendants, Dong Melidong and Chang Hwang, will be sentenced on April 9. Cases against other defendants remain pending.
Yost’s Special Prosecutions Section prosecuted the cases in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
