Columbiana plans events for America’s 250th birthday
COLUMBIANA — Several events are being planned in the city to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.
City Councilman Ty Graham briefed council recently on the events being planned by the America 250 Committee working under the Columbiana Area Tourism Bureau.
“We are going to try to come up with a series of events that will bring the community together and engage everybody across the city,” Graham said.
The committee has already submitted forms to the city for three events that Graham said are going to be the main events held around the Fourth of July holiday.
One of these is a scholarship competition to be held at Idabell’s and Firestone Park.
Graham said the competition is a collaboration with Heartland Christian, Columbiana and Crestview schools.
Two students from each school will be selected to compete against one another in an art show and speech competition to be held July 7.
The public is invited to attend the competition, he added.
“We wanted to make sure we found some way to get students involved and the schools as well,” he said.
Another event is the America 250 festival to be held on July 3 on South Main Street.
The committee requested council approved blocking off South Main Street from the circle to PNC Bank for that particular event.
Graham said the intent is to have food trucks, concessions, bounce houses and inflatables available.
The third event they have submitted a form for includes what Graham described as the capstone event, which is the Fourth of July event in Firestone Park.
He said the committee is excited to bring in Glyphix Drone to perform a drone show that will honor the city, Ohio and America and will culminate with a small fireworks display.
Graham explained that it will be the traditional Fourth of July event in the park with the addition of the drone show and that no drones will be flying over any homes.
Two bands have already been selected to perform during the Concerts in the Park on that day as well.
Graham said other events they are planning include “Patriot Games” which is a series of athletic competitions involving members of the community who wish to participate.
“We are continuing to iron out the details of that. We are really excited about it. The committee has spent a lot of time putting together an event that will make everybody proud,” he said.
Council approved the event requests.
