LISBON — The Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities recognized three Direct Support Professionals for their dedication and contributions to helping individuals with disabilities lead full and meaningful lives. Rachel Ashby, Daniel Viets and Braden Johnson received DSP Excellence Awards on March 10 during the Board’s annual Employment Recognition Dinner.

Provider Compliance and Relations Specialist Carrie Lawton explained that Direct Support Professionals help individuals lead meaningful, self-directed lives and allow them to be active members of their communities. “They make a difference every day and leave a lasting impact on the people who they support and on the community as a whole,” Lawton said.

Kitty Kromer, Employment Services Coordinator at the Columbiana County Educational Service Center, said Ashby positively impacts individuals with developmental disabilities both in her workplace and in the community. During her time off, Ashby volunteers at the Columbiana Theater Project for special needs students. “Rachel’s job and her heart extend well beyond the workplace. To know Rachel is to know love, kindness and grace. She has touched many lives over the years,” Kromer said.

Employment Development, Inc. CEO Jacob Lawton praised Viets for his compassion and patience in all interactions, and said he is adaptable, positive and thinks outside the box. “Daniel empowers those he assists to make their own choices and does a million little things each day to help those he serves,” Lawton said.

Seth Walker, Director of Threshold Residential Services, said Johnson began as a part-time staff member and over the years, has proven himself to be a caring, competent residential coordinator for Threshold. “Braden has been recognized by every department at Threshold. He demonstrates composure, empathy and servitude and is a sterling example of leadership,” Walker said.
