GOSHEN TOWNSHIP — Goshen Township will apply for a Community Development Block (CDB) Grant to potentially fund a future paving project.

The trustees voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a resolution authorizing an application for the CDB Grant to potentially cover the costs of repaving the section of Duck Creek Road from state Route 165 to Pine Lake Road.

Trustee Chair Shawn Mesler said that he had spoken with “several people from the county” and that the township had “a fairly good chance” of receiving the grant, which could award up to $200,000 for the project. However, the grant does not cover engineering costs, which Mesler said would be $16,000.

“So, if we do move forward with the project, as long as the paving came in under $200,000, our obligation to pave the one mile would be $16,000,” said Mesler.

Mesler said that for “the past several years” the township has not qualified for the CDB Grant because it has not met the required threshold of over 51% of residents classified as having low to moderate income, but that a portion of the township was eligible this year.

Three projects will be awarded the grant this year, and if Goshen Township is selected as one of them, the project would not be completed until next summer.

Mesler also said there will be a meeting on April 23 in the Mahoning County commissioners office where the trustees can “try to convince the commissioners this would be a good project for them to fund.”

The trustees also voted unanimously to approve the hire of Alexander Meyers as a new part-time police officer. Police Chief John Calko said that Meyers iss a recent graduate of the Youngstown State University Police Academy, an alumnus of West Branch High School and a member of the United States Air Force Reserve.

“I think he’ll be a great addition to our department,” Calko said.

The trustees will meet next at 6 p.m. on May 12.

Starting at $2.99/week.
