County municipalities looking at safety for electric bike use

LISBON — As more people are opting to use electric bikes at least two Columbiana County municipalities are looking at ways to increase safety.

Both Columbiana and East Palestine officials discussed the matter during their May council meetings.

Columbiana City Manager Lance Willard said the police department is putting out informational flyers about the e-bikes and is also going to be communicating with the schools about the rules and regulations.

“You see more and more of these bikes. These bikes are pretty fast and these children need to know what they are doing out there,” Willard said.

Council member Tony Dattilio said he has noticed an increase in e-bike use in the city.

“They are all over the place,” he said.

In East Palestine, Mayor Trent Conaway told council earlier this month that there is an ongoing safety concern regarding the e-bikes and scooters.

According to minutes of the May 11 council meeting, Conaway suggested a potential requirement of a free registration for e-bike users and a class to teach basic traffic laws.

Police Chief Weingart said that School Resource Officer Brindisi planned to give a presentation on bike and scooter safety at the school prior to summer break.

Village Manager Antonio Diaz-Guy recommended a class be held at the school every summer.

Starting at $2.99/week.
