CCESC secures grant for Salem kindergarten camp
LISBON — The Columbiana County Educational Service Center (ESC) has secured a grant for the Salem School District Kindergarten Boot Camp this summer.
ESC Superintendent Marie Williams said the service center applied for the $111,000 in state funding on behalf of Salem schools.
The ESC board was notified in May that the funding was awarded, according to meeting minutes posted online.
The funding will go toward staffing and supplies for the program.
The four-week Kindergarten readiness program is offered in partnership with the ESC and Ohio Department of Children and Youth.
Williams also announced during the May board meeting that the ESC is not continuing its behavior units in Wellsville.
“We will increase the number of classrooms that we have at our Knox location and Wellsville will be taking over their own classes,” she said.
Also in the meeting minutes it was noted that ESC Board member Daniel Winston said he attended the most recent Wellsville Board of Education meeting and appreciates that the school district plans to use the ESC for sole services in the coming school year.
“Wellsville carved out a portion of their end of year event just for the ESC and I really appreciate them doing that,” he added.
Other updates provided by Williams included that the ESC is completing its accreditation through CARF and should know in the next few months if the accreditation is approved.
The service center first became accredited through CARF in 2017 and holds three-year accreditation in areas of community employment services, job development and employee development services, according to carf.org.
The board then approved several personnel matters for the upcoming school year.
The next meeting was set for 4 p.m. June 16.
