WINONA – The Winona Strawberry Festival, held Sunday by the Winona Area Historical Society, had a large turnout of people who came to socialize, enjoy the food and observe historic demonstrations.

The favorite of the day appeared to be the homemade vanilla ice cream served with a topping of strawberries. It was so popular that they ended up running out of strawberries to serve with the ice cream.

In addition to strawberries and ice cream, attendees were able to purchase homemade cakes, pies, brownies, fudge, barbequed chicken halves with sides of baked beans and cole slaw, and sandwiches.

Attendees were able to watch the process of turning flax into fiber and then it being used to spin into thread.

Sheila Starcher, who currently resides in Salem, and formerly lived in Winona, demonstrated spinning on her grandmother Edna Brandt’s spinning wheel. Starcher has shared that craft with her daughter who also does spinning with her great-grandmother’s spinning wheel.

A variety of historic vehicles were on display for attendees to view.

Kiko Auctions was at the event to auction off a large variety of items donated to serve as a fundraiser for the Winona Area Historical Society.

Representatives from a wide variety of Columbiana County historical associations were on hand to provide information on their areas.

There were representatives from Hanover Township, Lisbon, Museum of Ceramics, Columbiana County, Damascus, Salem, Winona, Columbiana/Fairfield Township, Burchfield Homestead, Western Columbiana County, Friends of Beaver Creek, Wellsville, Teegarden Vicinity, Leetonia Coke Ovens and Columbiana County Archives and Research Center.
