Lisbon pool among state-funded projects in county
LISBON — A $150,000 request to fund Lisbon swimming pool improvements is among the Columbiana County projects receiving funding from Ohio’s Capital Budget, state Sen. Al Cutrona, R-Canfield, announced Thursday.
“This is really good news for Lisbon. The pool is used by so many people, not only from Lisbon but by surrounding communities,” Lisbon Mayor Peter Wilson said when contacted.
The popular Sadie Van Fossan Pool at Cedar Park didn’t open this year due to repairs needed, including replacement of the filtration system and pump and repairs needed for leaks. It’s a topic that’s come up at council meetings for many months dating back to last year.
Wilson estimated the cost for the new filtration system at $110,000 to replace the system that quit working. He also explained that a pool consultant used listening devices to see where the water was seeping through. There’s still another test that needs completed on a return pipe for the pool.
He’s hopeful that the state funding will cover most of the cost and said he still needs to get all the details about the award of money.
“We’re extremely pleased that we received this funding. Thank you to state Rep. Monica Robb Blasdel, R-New Waterford, and state Sen. Al Cutrona, R-Canfield,” Wilson said.
He received a call from Blasdel on Monday and from Cutrona on Tuesday.
The splash pad is open this year and ready for users to beat the heat, with an adults hour from 11 a.m. to noon and the splash pad open from noon to 6 p.m. for children 12 and under every day. During a recent council meeting, a donation of some splash pad apparatuses from the village of East Palestine was acknowledged, with many thanks.
At the most recent council meeting, council members hired Aniyah Alicea, Roman Hawken, Rylee Hawken, Delaney Pickens and Maelee Smith as part-time parks attendants at a rate of $12.50 per hour. The splash pad is open seven days a week and between the five of them, they must cover 56 hours per week to monitor the splash pad and perform other duties while there.
The plan is to get the work done on the pool for reopening in 2027.
“I’m guardingly optimistic that the pool will open next year,” Wilson said.
The announcement by Cutrona about funded projects in the 33rd District said more than $8.5 million was secured for projects in Columbiana, Mahoning and Carroll County. Blasdel’s 79th District covers Columbiana and Carroll counties.
Other projects funded in Columbiana County include:
— Salem City Lincoln Plaza, $600,000.
— Columbiana City Playground, $300,000.
— Wurster Memorial Splash Pad & Amphitheater improvements in Leetonia, $115,000.
