Salem City Health District to host resource fair Saturday
SALEM — The Salem City Health District will hold its fifth annual Health Resource Fair Saturday.
The fair will be held in Waterworth Memorial Park from 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. Saturday, coinciding with the annual Art in the Park festival, presented by Myers Family Insurance. Health Commissioner Chelsea Clark said that the fair would be held in a new location within the park by the Sunset Boulevard parking lot near the dog park and nature trail.
The resource fair is set to feature free activities and lunch for kids, and tables from 12 service providers offering medical and wellness resources.
Clark said that the free lunch would include hot dogs donated by Fresh Mark, baked chips, and a choice of 100% juice or water. The featured activities would include an obstacle course of physical challenges, hands-only CPR demonstrations and “glitter germs.” Kids who complete the obstacle course will receive a medal to commemorate their success, and the department will have CPR kits to hand out.
Clark said that glitter germs serve as a visual model of the impact of disinfectants like soap. She explained that glitter is added to a plate of water as a visible representation of the germs within, and dish soap is then added which repels the glitter.
“It’s a good way to teach kids about the importance of proper hand washing,” Clark said.
Clark said that the department had previously used the demonstration at Kent State at Salem’s Steam event, and that it had been very popular with the students in attendance. She also said that they would have additional water and hand sanitizer on hand so that participating kids could put that lesson into practice.
