SALEM — The annual Salem Super Cruise will drift through the city for four days of family fun this June.
This year’s cruise will be held June 11 through 14, and will officially begin with the annual order to “start your engines” set to be given by Mayor Cyndi Baronzzi Dickey at 7 p.m. June 11 in the municipal parking lot across the street from the Timberlanes Complex, which serves as the primary hub for the Super Cruise.
The National Anthem will be played immediately prior to the official start at 6:55 p.m., and Along for the Ride will be performing at the Broadway Stage from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. As in years past, while the cruise does not officially kickoff until the evening, cruising downtown will begin a few hours early on June 11 at noon.
In addition to daily activities, the cruise will feature several activities all four days including: a four-day 50/50 drawing, a four-day Chinese auction and a vendor craft show at the corner of Pershing and Broadway. As in years past, super cruise T-shirts will be available at a cost of $15 for all sizes in red, blue, black, neon yellow and pink, and can be purchased at the main tent in the municipal parking lot across the street from the Timberlanes Complex.
This year’s cruise will also see the first laps of two new car shows to celebrate both the “old school” and “new school” of automotive excellence while raising funds for Salem families in need.
The New School Car Show will celebrate those cars produced from 1980 to today on Friday, while the Old School Car Show will highlight those vehicles produced in 1979 or earlier in the main municipal lot. Registration for both shows will be held at the main information tent from noon to 2 p.m. for a fee of $5, with all proceeds benefiting the Salem Community Pantry.
The first 50 participants to register each day will receive dash plaques and trophies will be awarded at 3 p.m. for best stock, best under construction, best custom, director’s choice, queen of the show, and best in show.
Friday’s activities will include: the New School Car Show from noon to 3 p.m.; Valve cover racing with registration at 5:30 p.m. and races at 6 p.m.; music by RDNA from 7 to 10 p.m. on the Broadway Stage; and cruising downtown all day.
Saturday’s activities will include: a car show at Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; the Old School Car Show from noon to 3 p.m.; the annual garden tractor pull at 2 p.m. on South Broadway; a car show at Rendezvous Bar & Grille from 3 to 6 p.m.; Valve cover racing with registration at 3:30 p.m. and races at 4 p.m.; music by the Memphis Soul Brew band from 3 to 6 p.m. on the Broadway Stage, followed by the SB Music from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. on the Broadway Stage, and cruising downtown all day.
The cruise will wind down Sunday with the Show & Shine Car Show sponsored by Boot Electric from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the main municipal lot. Trophies will be awarded for best in show, mayor’s choice, sponsor’s choice, and over 20 other categories, and the first 100 entrants will receive dash plaques.
Immediately following the show, the drawings will be held for the annual four-day 50/50 raffle at 3 p.m. and the Christina Langen & House Party band will perform from 1 to 4 p.m. on the Broadway Stage.
Those who want to get a jumpstart on the automotive excitement can attend a special pre-kickoff at Salem West Healthcare Center from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday June 10. The event will feature concession stands and a basket raffle, and has no fee for entry or admission.
