Columbiana County Park District adjusts social media page

By MARY ANN GREIER 4 min read

LISBON -- "The Columbiana County Park District" is the new official Facebook page for the county park district after several social media address changes the past several months.

District commissioner Neal Bayless, who's been working on the district's social media presence since joining the board last month, suggested the new name and the rest of the board agreed.

"Hopefully we can work out the oversight details so we don't have to go through this ever again," he said.

The original Facebook page did not have "the" in front of the name, but the board no longer had access, then another address was put in place that abbreviated the name and became the official page.

"The one that was the real deal has turned into something else," Bayless said.

This happened after the resignation of the previous board members at the end of May.

Since June, Bayless started posting information as Supporters of Columbiana County Parks & Greenway Trail, but now the change has been made to the new address.

He stressed the importance of social media and said since the new board's first meeting, views have increased.

In other business, the board reviewed new service proposals from United Rentals and Diamondback Porta Potts for portable restrooms. The board has been using United Rentals and recently checked the cost to add a second cleaning per week. The per unit price was quoted as $196 for one unit with one weekly cleaning and $260 for one unit with two weekly cleanings. For Diamondback, the cost for one unit with one cleaning per week was set as $182. The proposal said additional servicing costs $35 weekdays and $50 weekends.

The board pays for four units with one each at four different locations. Administrative assistant Mark Guy suggested letting Diamondback handle two units starting in August. District commissioner Kevin Todd asked if United does a good job, with Vice Chairman Eileen Dray-Bardon saying yes, they've had no problems with United. Diamondback is a local company and she said she liked the idea of trying out Diamondback.

The board agreed to use Diamondback for two of the sites and keep United for two.

The board met briefly in executive session for a personnel matter and when the board returned to open session, the board agreed to designate Guy as permanent part-time employee instead of just part-time, making him eligible for paid time off. Dray-Bardon said previous administrative assistants were always hired as permanent part-time. The designation will be retroactive to his start date as a county employee.

For information only, Chairman Tom Butch advised board members that a property owner who had already donated some land to the park district years ago in the Dungannon area wants to donate the rest of the property to the park district upon his death. The property is adjacent to the land already owned by the park district, but has buildings on it, so there would be a lot to maintain. Dray-Bardon said it's fairly out of the way, but the district could just hold the property. She said the district has the authority to accept the property and do nothing with it or do something with it down the road.

Also noted was that the plaque on a memorial bench at the Franklin Square parking lot was missing and will be replaced.

Cub Scout Packs 16 and 14 will be having a bike safety event at the Washingtonville trail head, so Bayless suggested taking the leftover bike helmets there for distribution.

In financial matters, the board approved expenditures of $2,031.45 for May and $4,026.74 for June.

It was reported the recent fundraiser held last weekend on the Greenway trail raised a net profit of $7,828 through Friends of the Park, the non-profit which provides funding to assist the park district.

An accounting of what's been funded by the Friends of the Park for the park district from 2022 to 2026 includes: $27,570 worth of equipment to help with trail maintenance, including a new flail mower this year and a 4-wheeler service vehicle; $26,000 worth of maintenance support, including bridge repair, microburst cleanup and other trailhead expenses; $7,300 toward program support, including printing of program brochures and sponsoring of multiple programs on mushrooms, bees, reptiles, wildlife education and more; $1,800 to support installment and cleaning of porta-jons along the trail and Scenic Vista Park; signage along the trail; $1,500 assistance with Kiosk installment materials for Route 154 trailhead; and serving as administrator of donations for and installation of memorial benches.
