GOSHEN TOWNSHIP -- Two new officers have joined the Goshen Police District.

Township trustees unanimously approved the hires of Kyle Vacha and Raymond Janecko as part-time officers in their meeting Tuesday.

Police Chief John Calko said that Vacha has served as a deputy for the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office since 2019 and that his experience will benefit the department. Janecko currently serves as an officer for the Coitsville Township Police Department and has been working in law enforcement for nearly four years.

"I think Raymond will be a great addition to this agency. He's motivated to learn and will be a great team player," Calko said.

The trustees also discussed a proposal to begin offering an optional supplemental insurance program to the township's employees. In the board's June 9 meeting Calko told the trustees that he had received requests from multiple officers that the township begin offering an insurance supplemental for dental coverage and that he had spoken with Colonial Life about a potential plan that would come with dental and life insurance as well as disability programs, which would be paid directly by officers that opt in at no cost to the township.

On Tuesday, Trustee Shawn Mesler said that if the township wants to move forward with the plan the trustees will need to designate a liaison to complete the initial paperwork on the township's behalf, and that the township won't need to be involved beyond that initial step.

Trustee John Bricker agreed to serve as the liaison, and the trustees unanimously approved the program.

Other police matters discussed included repairs to one of the department's cruisers. Calko said that the air conditioning unit in cruiser number five had failed, and that while the cruiser was still in the warranty period that the failure was not covered under the warranty. He said that the repairs cost approximately $1,700, and that the cruiser was back in service.

The trustees will meet next at 6 p.m. on Aug. 11.
