SALEM -- The city's annual fire hydrant flushing will begin Sunday.
The utilities commission announced in its meeting Thursday that the utilities department will begin the city's annual fire hydrant flushing at 10 p.m. Sunday. Flushing will continue through Thursday night.
Following the initial period, additional flushing will continue during daytime hours over the next few weeks as permitted by weather conditions.
According to a statement from the utilities department, while hydrant flushing is ongoing, residents may experience discolored water, low water pressure, or air in the water lines.
"This is a normal part of the flushing process. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we perform this important maintenance to ensure water quality," read the statement.
