COLUMBIANA -- The Crestview Local School district kicked off its first day of school on Thursday, and District Superintendent Dan Hill said he is excited for the new school year.
Hill spoke about the new school year in his report to the board of education earlier this month.
At that time he said the buildings are ready for students after a summer of cleaning and readiness from the maintenance and custodial team.
"Mrs. Annette VanHorn has been working hard to implement the bus routes to safely transport our students, and our students have been busy with athletics, band and summer programs for a successful school year," he said.
He added that the "Athletic/Trophy Case" entrance will be the main entrance into the middle and high school building this school year.
The district has a total of 1,120 students enrolled in K-12 and 79 for kindergarten as of the board meeting date.
In other matters during the board meeting, High School Principal Caleb Crowl said that students taking their College Credit Plus courses online will have the option to come into the building to do their school work. "Some students choose to come only for their in-person classes then go home to work on their CCP classes," he said.
He also said there are 27 enrolled at the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center for a whole day and an additional 44 enrolled at career center for a half day. There are 85 students who are taking at least one College Credit Plus class for college credit, he said.
He was also happy to report that Advanced Placement Test results showed that a group of Crestview students scored higher than the state average on several of the subjects tested.
Items approved by the board during the meeting included the five-year financial forecast; a three-year contract with the Columbiana County Sheriff's Office for two school resource officers; the purchase of a new scoreboard for the new performance gym in the new PreK-12 Building from Smart Signs in the amount of $149,865; and a one-year limited contract for Kendall Karina as middle school and high school secretary.
Several other personnel matters were also approved during the meeting for the new school year.
The next meeting was set for 5 p.m. Sept. 9.
