United Local implements new grading scale for high school

HANOVERTON -- A new grading scale is in place for United Local High School students for the new school year.

The new scale is included in the student handbooks the board of education approved during the Aug. 15 meeting.

The board originally approved going back to the 10-point grading scale earlier this year with it effective for high school students beginning this school year.

As a result, an A grade is 90-100, B is 80-89, C is 70-79, and so forth.

Previously, students were on a scale in which an A grade was between 93-100, a B grade was 85 to 92, a C grade was 74-84, and so forth.

The change was made to provide clear and predictable grading expectations, better alignment between high school and college coursework, and smoother transition for students in College Credit Plus coursework, High School Principal Sarah Hamilton-Phillips said in the proposal submitted to the board in May for approval.

"The scale aligns with the grading practices used by many high schools and colleges," the district stated in the high school student handbooks approved by the board this month.

Also approved by the board during the Aug. 15 meeting was a memorandum of understanding with the Family Recovery Center for a vaping intervention and screening program.

According to the agreement, the program is for students found to be using nicotine or THC vaping products on school property.

"This initiative is designed to reduce disciplinary consequences while promoting student well-being, and this partnership reflects the district's commitment to supporting student success," the agreement states.

The program is only educational in nature and does not establish a medical or mental health provider patient relationship, according to the agreement.

Parents have a right to give consent for their child to participate in the program as well as view educational materials provided to students.
