LISBON -- The Columbiana County Career and Technical Center has started the new school year with the new class time change that is expected to give students more lab time.
The change was approved by the board of education earlier this year, effective for this school year.
As a result, instead of beginning the day at 7:50 a.m. classes are now starting at 7:45 a.m., resulting in an additional five minutes per day, which translates to a new daily career lab time of 179 minutes.
An increase in lab time also translates to more career-tech funding from the state.
In addition to the time change, the career center has also welcomed the new treasurer, who has been on the job for the last three weeks and attended her first board meeting this month.
Maia Amato was previously awarded a three-year contract that took effect Aug. 1.
She replaced longtime treasurer Kathy Scanlon who retired in July.
Amato formerly served as treasurer for the Wellsville School District.
"She has been fantastic to work with," Career Center Public Relations Co-Coordinator Elizabeth Wright said.
Also during the recent board meeting the board approved a new five-year contract for Superintendent Jeremy Corbisello.
The contract is effective through July of 2032.
Other personnel matters approved were the resignation of Michael Hughes as Precision Machining and Manufacturing instructor, effective Aug. 11 of this year; and the hiring of Brittaney Loboy and Florence Turner as adult education part-time instructors.
The board also passed a resolution that indicates that STRS pick-up contributions shall be treated as additional compensation for retirement purposes.
An agreement with the Columbiana County Mental Health Clinic was also approved that will provide a youth case manager for 12 hours per week.
During the informational portion of the board meeting Gwen Samet from the Ohio School Boards Association announced that two board members will be receiving the 2026 aptitude award.
This award falls under the STAR Awards Program, which stands for Service, Training, Aptitude, and Recognition.
"Of more than 3,400 board of education members only 70 will receive this recognition," Wright said.
Career center board members Brian Moore and Melissa Wellman will be recognized Sept. 30 at the northeast Region Fall Conference.
