County board of developmental disabilities to hold informational day at Lib’s Market

SALEM - The Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities (CCBDD) will hold an informational day at Lib's Market, 474 E. State St., Salem, on Tuesday, Oct. 6, from 9 to 11 a.m. Patrons visiting Lib's during these hours can enjoy a free cup of coffee and learn more about the Board's educational and employment programs for individuals with disabilities.

Family members with a loved one who has a developmental disability are encouraged to attend to learn more about services the board offers in the community. Paul Anthony, CCBDD Business Engagement Specialist, explained that the Board's many programs assist people in reaching their full potential, and noted that services are long-term. Services include waiver case management; services for young children through the Help Me Grow Program; behavioral supports; community involvement programs like the Aktion Club; and coordination and referral for employment services. Robert Bycroft School also falls under the Board's umbrella.

Employers who want to learn more about the many benefits of hiring someone with a disability are also welcome to attend. Shirley Bowald, Community Inclusion and Employment Manager, said there is a lot of misinformation surrounding hiring people with disabilities and businesses often have questions about things like transportation and accommodations.

"If you are an employer and you want to create an inclusive workplace, come talk to us. There are many benefits to hiring someone with a disability but businesses often have questions about things like transportation and accommodations. We can give you facts and more information and get you started on the process to find a great employee," Bowald said.

CCBDD Superintendent William Devon said the goal of the informational day is to educate people on what the Board of Developmental Disabilities does.

"Most people know Robert Bycroft School but they may not realize that the Board has many other programs to support people throughout their lives," Devon explained. "Individuals with developmental disabilities are an asset in the community and in the workplace. They work hard and take pride in doing their job well. They show up every day and many remain at their place of employment for many years. So please join us at the open house, enjoy a free cup of coffee and learn more about the many services we offer for Columbiana County residents."
