LISBON -- An Ohio Scrap Tire Collection Day will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Sept. 19 at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds.
Free to residents, the scrap tire collection event is sponsored by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and the CCH Solid Waste District.
Columbiana County Commissioner Tim Ginter made the announcement during Wednesday's commissioners' meeting, noting that it's a good opportunity for residents to get rid of unwanted tires the right way.
A maximum amount of 10 scrap tires will be accepted per vehicle. Only passenger car and light truck tires with no rims can be dropped off. No tires will be accepted from businesses.
CCH Solid Waste District Executive Director Missy Burchfield is also trying to promote the scrap tire collection event. CCH stands for Carroll, Columbiana and Harrison counties.
The solid waste district provides the recycling containers used by residents throughout all three counties, stressing the need to separate materials and place them in the proper dumpsters.
Recycling sites include separate dumpsters for plastics, glass, aluminum or metal cans, paper, and cardboard, with multiple containers for the cardboard which can include cereal boxes, tissue boxes paper towel rolls or toilet paper rolls along with cardboard boxes. Residents are asked to flatten boxes to make more room.
Residents are also asked not to mix materials or place plastic bags in the containers. No plastic bags are allowed. Labels on the dumpsters indicate what's acceptable in each particular dumpster.
In other business, Pete Cockle, program administrator of the Columbiana Soil and Water Conservation District, reminded commissioners about the SWCD annual meeting set for 5 p.m. Sept. 17 followed by dinner and presentations at 6 p.m. at the Jan-Paul Farms, Inc., McCann Road, Kensington. Attendees must RSVP with Cockle by Sept. 11. Tickets are $10.
During recent meetings, the commissioners followed recommendations of the Columbiana County Department of Job and Family Services Director Rachel Ketterman for contracts, memorandums of agreement and employee discipline related to DJFS. The DJFS fraud plan was updated to match changes to Ohio Revised Code and also added terminology related to a person using someone else's name or information to receive benefits.
Memorandums of agreement were approved with the Columbiana County Family and Children First Council and Counseling Center of Columbiana County for the conscious discipline expansion pilot project in Lisbon schools from Aug. 18, 2026 to June 30, 2027 with a contract ceiling of $7,500 and with the Columbiana County Prosecutor for investigator services from Oct. 1, 2026 to Sept. 30, 2027 with a ceiling of $40,000. A contact was approved with Protect-n-Shred for document destruction services from Oct. 1, 2026 through Sept. 30, 2027 with a ceiling of $2,529.
A subcontract was approved with Catholic Charities Regional Agency for the domestic violence shelter from Oct. 1, 2026 through Sept. 30, 2027 with a spending ceiling of $75,000. Contract amendments were approved with Clean Choice Maids for homemaker services through the Senior Services Levy from Jan. 1, 2026 to Dec. 31, 2026 for $70,000 and with Catholic Charities for the domestic violence shelter to increase the unit rate for the contract through Sept. 30 this year from $24.28 to $26.
The commissioners also met in executive session with Ketterman to discuss employee discipline. When they returned to open session, they agreed to adopt what was recommended by Ketterman, including a 2-day suspension for a social services employee for discourteous treatment of community partners and misuse of the time clock system. Another social service worker was disciplined recently for engaging in off-duty conduct that did not align with agency practices or missions.
Commissioners recently gave permission to hunt on the county's County Home Road property to John Cope and journalized a liquor permit request from Adam May Inc./Gulf Unity in Unity Township.
The next meeting of county commissioners will be 9 a.m. Sept. 16 in the downtown courthouse.
