Equipment fire briefly blocks Broadway

SALEM -- An equipment fire required employees at a Salem business to be temporarily evacuated Tuesday.
An equipment fire was reported at around 2:50 p.m. Tuesday at American Standard Brands in Salem. Salem Fire Department Lt. Kevin Bryan said that employees of the business had extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher and shut off power to the machine to prevent further fire prior to firefighter's arrival. He also said that the employees had already begun evacuating the area for safety when the department arrived.
"The employees did a great job by using the extinguisher to put the fire out, and in shutting off power to the machine," Bryan said.
Heavy smoke remained in the business throughout the second floor, and firefighters set up fans to ventilate the smoke and chemical powder from the business' fire extinguisher.
Bryan said that the area was checked with a thermal imaging camera to ensure there were no hot spots that could potentially reignite.
Bryan also said no injuries were caused by the fire, but two employees were treated on scene by EMT for inhalation of the chemical powder and signed refusals for transport.
The department received automatic aid from the Damascus, Green Township and Perry Township fire departments. The Damascus and Green Township fire departments were canceled en route; however, the Perry Township Fire Department responded to the scene to provide additional fans for ventilation.
