SALEM -- Multiple departments responded to a house fire on Third Street Friday.
The Salem Fire Department was notified at 10:50 p.m. Friday that the porch of the residence at 1134 E. Third St. had caught fire. When firefighters arrived, all residents had already evacuated the home, but two cats were still inside the residence.
A 1.75-inch hose line was advanced to the rear of the residence, and the rear porch was extinguished. A second handline was advanced inside of the residence through the front door, and fire within the dining room and kitchen were extinguished.
The fire was confined to the first floor and fully controlled by 10:58 p.m.
There were heavy smoke conditions throughout the residence, and both cats were removed from the residence and treated on scene with pet masks to supply oxygen.
EMT responded to the scene to treat one resident, who signed a refusal of treatment form. There were no injuries to department personnel, nor damage to any equipment.
Positive pressure ventilation was set up to remove the smoke from the residence, and gas and water service was shut off at the meter and disaster services responded to the scene to secure the residence.
The fire caused heavy damage to the rear of the residence's first floor, and to a pickup truck that was parked close to the residence.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and the Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office was notified to assist with the investigation.
The fire department received mutual aid from the Green Township, Perry Township, and Winona volunteer fire departments.
