SALEM -- A Salem business experienced a kitchen fire Monday.
A structure fire was reported at the Foundry at 7:18 p.m. When firefighters arrived, smoke was visible from the rear of the building and employees of the business advised them that the fire was in the kitchen.
Salem Fire Department Capt. Jeff Olinger said that fire was located on a stove top and appeared to have been started by items on the stove top overheating when someone accidentally turned on the wrong burner while attempting to heat something. He said that the oven hood system was deployed but did not fully extinguish the fire, and that firefighters extinguished the remaining flames with a fire extinguisher from the business.
According to the report firefighters also attempted to use a class K extinguisher from the business but "no product came out of the extinguisher."
Olinger said that once the fire was extinguished, firefighters checked the area with a thermal imaging camera to ensure that there was no extension into the walls nor any hot spots that could possibly reignite. He also said that they contacted the health department to inspect and inform the business when it could re-open.
According to the report firefighters also advised the management of the business of the equipment issues and that the hood system and ABC fire extinguisher needed to be serviced.
No injuries or entrapments were reported. Property damages were estimated to be approximately $3,000, and the value of lost contents was estimated to be approximately $5,000.
