Last year, the Salem Historical Society was accepted into the National Park Service's Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program. As part of the program, the Society can now officially stamp National Parks Passport Books for visitors who complete the Underground Railroad Trolley Tour. Among the first visitors to receive the new stamp was the Barrett family, who recently took the tour. Proudly displaying their stamped passport books are Ryan and Chelsea Garrett and their daughters, Tessa and Laci, along with Historical Society docent Keith Mann. Approximately 450 people have experienced the Underground Railroad Trolley Tour this year through both public and private tours. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Visitors have expressed their appreciation for the accurate and comprehensive story of Salem's Underground Railroad activities in the early to mid-1800s as they learn more about the people and places that shaped Salem's history.
