SALEM -- A Salem house fire Wednesday afternoon resulted in the death of several animals.
According to a Facebook post by the Salem Fire Department, the department responded to a house fire in the 800 block of Highland Avenue, finding heavy smoke in the rear of the structure.
In a separate post by the Columbiana County Humane Society, agent Fabian Pike confirmed there were a total of seven animals on site. Three dogs were saved while four cats perished.
The Salem Police Department transported the dogs to a local animal hospital for treatment.
"The true heroes in this situation were the firefighters, who bravely entered the burning home to rescue the animals inside," Fabian said in his post. "They managed to corner the dogs, risking their own lives to bring them to safety. The police and first responders acted quickly, and because of their efforts, these animals now have a second chance at life."
Green Township, Perry Township and Damascus fire departments also responded.
