SALEM--The community favorite Trail of Treats returns on Oct. 18.

Salem families looking to get into the Halloween spirit early and enjoy an afternoon of family fun can look forward to the 11th annual Trail of Treats from 3 to 5 p.m. Oct. 18 at Waterworth Memorial Park.

The annual event is sponsored by the Salem Parks Department, Salem Area Chamber of Commerce and Curing Retinal Blindness Foundation. It offers children aged 12 and under an opportunity to collect treats, without any tricks, at no cost.

Parks Director Kelli Pastore said more than 60 groups have signed up to hand out candy already this year, and that any groups interested in participating can contact her by email at kpastore@cityofsalemohio.org. She also said a portion of the Sunset Boulevard Parking lot near the trail will be closed.

Before the trail gets underway, there will be a costume contest at the Orashan Memorial Civic Center, often called the "band shell," beginning at 2 p.m. As always, the contest will award prizes in multiple categories including best overall, scariest, funniest, most creative, and best group. New this year, there will also be a most patriotic category in celebration of the United States 250th anniversary.
