GOSHEN TOWNSHIP -- The Goshen Township Police Department has a new assistant police chief.
The board of trustees voted unanimously in its September meeting to authorize the promotion of Michael Platt from his prior position as detective sergeant to the department's assistant police chief and lieutenant.
Police Chief John Calko said that Platt, who was promoted to the sergeant position in September last year, had consistently demonstrated his dedication and skill since joining the department and that he looked forward to collaborating with him as his assistant chief.
"Since his hiring, Sgt. Platt has proven over and over again his ability to lead this agency in our goal to serve the community. He accomplishes tasks before being asked and completes the tasks which are asked of him quickly and precisely. He will succeed in this position, and I am excited to work with him. He's been phenomenal in our [police] force," Calko said.
Calko said that Ryan McBride, who has served as the department's assistant chief since 2022 following the resignation of Matthew Beck, was voluntarily stepping down from the position and would remain with the department as a patrolman.
Trustees also approved the promotion of Patrolman Russell Beatty to patrol sergeant, filling the vacancy left by the resignation of Jacob Rohr in August after he accepted a new position with the Conneaut Police Department.
Calko championed Beatty's leadership skills and dedication to serving the residents of Goshen Township and said he we happy to see him join the department's leadership team.
"Since [Beatty] was hired, he has shown leadership skills and the want and will to further this department's goals and become the best he can be for this community. He has done a phenomenal job since we hired him, and all the guys respect him here. He does a great job. I really am excited to get him in as part of the leadership here, and I think he will help us go where we want to be," Calko said.
Other matters approved include a new pricing agreement with Powers Oil and Propane. The trustees agreed to purchase up to 1,500 gallons of propane at a cost of approximately $1.99 per gallon for the period beginning Oct. 1 and concluding at the end of April this year.
Fiscal Officer Michele Barratt said that under the agreement, if the township does not purchase at least 80% of the agreed upon maximum, it will be subject to a $75 fee.
The board of trustees will meet next at 6 p.m. on Oct. 13.
