HANOVERTON -- The Hanover Township Historical Society is moving to a new location.

Following meetings with the United Local School District, the historical society was recently granted a lease to use two classrooms in the BC Building, formerly known as the Brautigam Center.

The lease is for $1 a year and is continuing until either party gives a 30-day notice to vacate.

According to minutes of the Sept. 9 and Oct. 2 United Local Board of Education meetings, historical society representatives Deb Blazer, Janet Reeder, and Joann Lucas presented the request to the board.

They said that the organization has operated from the NAPA building since 2019 but is seeking a permanent location to continue the vision of William "Bill" McKarns.

McKarns maintained a relationship with the historical society for a long time until his passing this summer at the age of 90.

The historical society plans to use one of the BC classrooms as a museum while the other room will be used for speakers, presentations, and classroom-style activities focused on local history.

The organization would also like to collaborate with district teachers to provide history lessons for students, according to the meeting minutes.

The board granted its approval for use of the rooms during the Oct. 14 meeting.

The historical society will now vacate its current space in the NAPA building and consolidate its collection into the BC building.

The historical society hopes to begin using the space within the next few months.

United Local Board of Education members said the location could provide valuable opportunities for students to learn about the community's history and recognized the proposed museum as a meaningful tribute to Mr. McKarns' hard work and dedication, the minutes stated.
