BELOIT – The Future Farmers of America (FFA) students at West Branch High School and the students in Marsha Coffee’s family and consumer science class at West Branch Middle School traveled to the woods near the schools to learn about the production of maple syrup.
They learned how to tap maple trees, collect sap and turn the watery sap into maple syrup using an old drill to make a hole, inserting a spile and hanging buckets to collect sap in 10 different maple trees.
“The students would check their buckets at the beginning of each class period for sap and would boil collected sap over an oven burner for several days in a row, until the sap became thick and light brown in color,” said FFA teacher Rebecca Zeisler.
The students collected approximately 20 gallons of sap and about a half gallon of syrup was made. At the end of the week, the students poured their maple syrup over french toast and hosted a lunch.
