Downtown Dining Experience tickets still available
SALEM -- Tickets are still available for the Downtown Dining Experience to be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Tickets will be available until noon that day at the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, 713 E. State St. With the purchase of a $35 ticket, attendees can sample delicious cuisine from the following restaurants: Boneshakers, Rancho Viejo, Ricky's English Pub, BB Rooners, Lib's Cafe & Market, Ezio's Italian Restaurant, Mike's Penn Avenue Grille, Coaches, Serendipity and they can also enjoy appetizers from Salem Giant Eagle while entering for a chance to win a diamond necklace at Troll's Jewelry.
The Quakertown Trolley will be available for walkers at three locations: the parking lot of Rancho Viejo, the municipal parking lot across from the Timberlanes Complex, and the municipal parking lot across from Ricky's English Pub. 42nd annual Kids Day set in Leetonia Saturday
LEETONIA -- The Leetonia Sportsman's Club will host its 42nd annual Kids Day and wiener roast on Saturday at the club grounds along East High Street. Activities include shooting, archery and fishing events for all children ages 6 to 15. Trophies will be awarded to contest winners and raffle prizes will be given away. Everything is free of charge.
Registration starts at 9:30 a.m. and continues throughout the day. Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Bring your fishing rod if you have one; but do not bring a rifle or bow.
This year's sponsors are Leetonia Police Department, Sport Fish and Wildlife Restoration, Safari Club International East Ohio-Northwest Penn Chapter, Ohio Division of Wildlife, National Wild Turkey Federation Inc., Ohio State Trapper's Association, Buckeye Big Buck Club, Columbiana County Federation of Conservation Clubs and Mahoning Valley Friends of the National Rifle Association.

"Story Trail" planned at Waterworth Park Saturday
SALEM - The Go Wild in the Park program, sponsored by Salem Parks and Recreation and Salem Public Library, offers "Story Trail" from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Waterworth Memorial Park's Nature Trail where they can read the story "Pete the Cat and the Cool Cat Boogie."

13th annual Museum Day Live! observed Sunday
SALEM -- Smithsonian magazine is sponsoring its 13th annual Museum Day Live! Hundreds of museums and cultural institutions around the United States are participating, including the Salem Historical Society and Museum. Last year's event drew over 200,000 participants who down loaded tickets and this year's event is expected to attract more museum goers than ever before. Nationally the Museum Day Live! has been designated for Saturday, but the Salem Historical Society had the option to offer the free admission with the downloaded ticket for two guests on Sunday. Church Women United to meet Monday
SALEM -- Officers will be installed when Church Women United holds its first meeting of the 2017-18 season on Monday at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1089 E. State St. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. followed by the business session and a program provided by Pastor Aimee Raymond.
Church Women United is open all all area men and women. The group's service project is to provide vouchers for Salem children to buy school clothes in the fall. The group also provides books. Video-conference program on brown bears offered
SALEM -- An interactive video-conference program on brown bears at the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary in Alaska begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 28 in Salem Public Library's Quaker Room. Alaska Zoo Education Director Stephanie Hartman will present a photo and video exploration to discover the majestic brown bears and hear many stories of her journey into the wilds of McNeil River. Included in the program will be an introduction to the Alaska Zoo, its location and mission. Registration is required in person, at salem.lib.oh.us or 330-332-0042.
Algonquin Mill Fall Festival planned in Carrollton
CARROLLTON -- The 47th annual Algonquin Mill Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 13-15 features a pioneer village, apple butter, sauerkraut, cookies, bean soup, craft demonstrations, photo and art show, live entertainment, juried craft vendors, antiques cars, etc. Children can enjoy train rides, pony rides, alpacas, llamas, face painting and sand art.

Masters Swimming starts Oct. 2 at Community Center
SALEM -- The Salem Community Center's (SCC) second season of United States Masters Swimming starts Oct. 2. Adult swimmers are welcome to join Swim Salem, local friends competing with Ohio Masters Swim Team.Last year, 10 local adult swimmers were registered with United States Masters Swimming and practicing for Ohio Masters at the SCC. Those who chose, competed in several meets across the state of Ohio and one qualifier competed at the USMS Long Course Nationals in Minneapolis, Minn. in August. Plans are to qualify more swimmers to compete at USMS Short Course Nationals in Indiana University's Natatorium in May 2018.
Practices are held on Mondays from 6 to 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Instructors are Barb Clary, USMS ALTS Certified and Sue Nutter, ASCA Level 2 Coach. West Branch Preschool wraps up first 2 weeks
BELOIT -- West Branch Preschool is wrapping up its first two weeks of classes with more than 70 students already enrolled in the program. Students and staff were excited to continue the new year with lots of new opportunities to learn including field trips to Whitehouse Fruit Farms and OH Wow! Science Center throughout the year. Lou Holtz/Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame
EAST LIVERPOOL-- In conjunction with its 20th year celebration in 2018, the Lou Holtz/Upper Ohio Valley Hall of Fame will accept nominations to recognize "20 Under 20" (20 young people of the valley who are excelling in their pursuits and also giving back to their communities).
Among those eligible for nomination are residents of Columbiana and Jefferson counties who will be at least 10 years old but no older than 19 years on June 4, 2018.
Nominees should show a pursuit of excellence in either academics or extracurricular activities such as athletics, art, music, theater, etc., and also have demonstrated some type of concern and stewardship for the community in which they live or the world at large, either by membership in organized group activities or development of an individual project.
"We want to showcase these potential 'future hall-of-famers' for what they are and encourage their continued dedication to the advancement of their own goals and the betterment of their community," said Hall of Fame Director Robin Webster.
The 20 young people selected will each receive a ticket for themselves and a guest to attend the Hall of Fame's banquet on June 4 where they will be profiled in the printed program and acknowledged. Each will also receive a certificate of recognition signed by Lou Holtz.
