12 youths vie for 4-H royalty at Canfield Fair

CANFIELD–This year’s Canfield Fair 4-H Royal Court includes six queen and six king candidates featuring several from local schools.

The king and queen will be chosen at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Main Concourse Stage across from the Canfield Fair Office. Queen candidates include Karlee Banks, Callia Barwick, Samantha Colonna, Cheyenne Heffner, Emma Reph and Olivia Reph. King candidates include Thomas Barnett, Matthew Fetty, Zachary Kemmer, Marcus Moliterno, James Moore and William Reph.

Queen candidates

–Karlee Banks, 17, will be a senior at Western Reserve High School this fall. She lives in North Jackson with her parents Ron and Kelly Banks. Karlee is a member of the Jackson-Milton Livestock 4-H Club and has been in 4-H for seven years. Her project areas include market hogs, market dairy feeder, market beef feeder, market heifer feeder and market steer and she is involved in many Junior Fair and 4-H activities including attending the Ohio 4-H Youth Conference, attending the Ohio Junior Fair Conference, a current member of the Mahoning County Junior Fair, participated in the Baby Shower at the Mill Creek Metro Parks Farm, helped with A Little Taste on the Farm, and works in the Junior Fair Jail at the Canfield Fair to raise money for the Junior Fair Scholarships. Karlee’s school activities include National Honor Society, Student Council and being a class officer.

–Callia Barwick, 16, will be a junior at Canfield High School. She lives in Canfield with her mother Madonna Barwick. Callia is a member of the Steel Valley K-9’s 4-H Club where she is currently the vice president of the club and has been in 4-H for 12 years. Her project areas include dogs, horse, veterinary science, leadership, STEM, food and nutrition, clothing, writing, healthy living and home living projects. She was chose as the 2018 Mahoning County Ohio State Fair participant in four projects and won the top honors at the State Fair in two projects. Callia is involved in many 4-H activities including the Food & Fashion Board, camp counselor at Camp Whitewood 4-H Camp, a 2016 and 2017 4-H Royal Court member, a member of the 2018 Ohio Teen Leadership Council and a member of the Ohio 4-H Health Heroes. Callia’s other activities include a member of the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board, Student Council, Interact Club, CCD Sunday School teacher, Canfield Little Cardinals High School coach, cheer leader for the Canfield High Varsity Basketball, and a track and field runner.

Cheyenne Heffner

–Samantha Colonna, 17, will be a senior at Ursuline High School. She lives in Youngstown with her mother Melissa Colonna and her father is Bill Noble. Samantha is a member of the The Llucky Llamas 4-H Club where she serves as president and a member of the Youngstown Tailwaggers 4-H Club where she serves as secretary. She has been in 4-H for nine years. Her project areas include small animals, llamas, rabbits, goats, photography, scrapbooking, dogs and mental health projects. She was chose as the Ohio Photography Achievement Award winner and was awarded the opportunity to attend the National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Ga., in November. She stays active in many activities including attending the Ohio 4-H Conference, a Mahoning County Outstanding Youth finalist, a 4-H Carteens facilitator and a current member of the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board. Samantha’s school activities include Global Rovers and French Club.

–Cheyenne Heffner, 17, will be a senior at Springfield Local High School. She lives in New Middletown with her parents James and Delilah Heffner. Cheyenne is a member of the Springfield Booster Boys 4-H Club where she currently serves as the president of the club and has been in 4-H for nine years. Her project areas include market beef feeder, market hog and Getting Started in Art. She was chosen as the 2018 Mahoning County Ohio State Fair participant in her Getting Started in Art project. Cheyenne’s involvement in 4-H activities include Camp Counselor at Camp Whitewood 4-H Camp and a 2016 and 2017 4-H Royal Court member. Her other activities include a member of the Columbiana, Mahoning & Trumbull Cattlemen’s Association where she serves as the Beef Ambassador, Mahoning County Outstanding Youth finalist, a current member of the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board, a member of the Springfield High School flag line and a track and field member.

–Emma Reph, 16, will be a senior at Western Reserve High School this fall. She lives in Berlin Center with her parents Steve and Robin Reph. She is a 10-year member of the Western Reserve Rangers 4-H Club where she currently serves as the vice president of the club. Her 4-H projects include food and nutrition, sewing, quilting, rabbits and poultry. She keeps involved in many 4-H activities including attending the Ohio 4-H Youth Conference, being a camp counselor at Camp Whitewood 4-H Camp, a member of our Food & Fashion Board and an Ohio State Fair 4-H Event Youth Assistant. Emma’s other activities include a current member of the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board, a member of the Western Reserve Rangers Marching Band and Pep Band and a youth group member at the Berlin Center United Methodist Church.

–Olivia Reph, 16, will be a senior at Western Reserve High School this fall. She lives in Berlin Center with her parents Steve and Robin Reph. Olivia is a 10-year member of the Western Reserve Rangers 4-H Club where she currently serves as the treasurer of the club. Her 4-H projects include food and nutrition, sewing, rabbits, poultry, a dairy beef feeder and public speaking projects. She was chosen as a 2018 Mahoning County Ohio State Fair participant in her Global Gourmet project where she won Outstanding of the Day. Olivia keeps involved in many 4-H activities including attending the Ohio 4-H Youth Conference, being a camp counselor at Camp Whitewood 4-H Camp, a 2017 4-H Royal Court member, a member of our Food & Fashion Board and a member of the 2018 Ohio Teen Leadership Council. Her other activities include a current member of the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board, a member of the Western Reserve Rangers Marching Band and Concert Band, youth group member at the Berlin Center United Methodist Church and a National Honor Society member.

King candidates

Emma Reph

–Thomas Barnett, 19, graduated this past spring from West Branch High School. He lives in Beloit with his parents Larry and Radawn Barnett. Thomas is a member of the Goshen Good Growers 4-H Club and has been a 4-H member for 10 years. His current project areas include market steer, market swine, market beef and dairy feeders, market lamb and market carcass lamb. He enjoys mentoring younger 4-H youth on how to care for their animals and teaching proper showmanship techniques. Thomas stays active by volunteering for many community service projects with his 4-H club including working at the Bunker Hill tractor pulls concession stand, cleaning up the Beloit Ruritans Park, collecting items for soldiers overseas and Christmas caroling at area nursing homes. He is currently a volunteer firefighter for the Beloit Fire Department.

–Matthew Fetty, 17, will be a senior this fall at Canfield High School. He lives in Canfield with his mother Lisa Fetty. Matthew is a member of the Youngstown Tailwaggers 4-H Club and has been a 4-H member for 12 years. His project area is showing dogs and includes dog showmanship, dog agility training and competition, dog rally and obedience training and competition. He stays very active by being a 2017 Royal Court member, volunteering to work at 4-H dog shows, volunteering at pet shops to encourage and educate other youth about the 4-H dog activities, mentoring and teaching younger 4-H youth taking dog projects and by being a current member of the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board. His other activities include being the captain of the varsity bowling team, volunteering at church and being a musician.

–Zachery (Zak) Kemmer, 18, will be a freshman at Westminster College this fall. He lives in Canfield with his parents Andrew and Brandy Kemmer. Zak is a member of the Just Chancin’ It 4-H Club where he currently serves as the treasurer and has been in 4-H for nine years. He enjoys taking many different livestock projects, which include pocket pets (amphibians) and horses, and stays active in 4-H by being a member of the 4-H equine team where he competes in Horse Bowl and Hypology, a member of the 2017 Royal Court, helping with Cloverbud Day Camp and enjoys riding his one-eyed retired breeding Icelandic Horse in the fun classes at the Canfield Fair. He also enjoys running cross-country and track.

–Marcus Moliterno, 15, will be a home-schooled high school sophomore. He lives in Canfield with his parents Jeff and Patty Moliterno. Marcus is a member of the Canfield Clover Kids 4-H Club and is currently serving as the president of the club. His project areas include pygmy goats, boer goats, public speaking and rocketry. He was chosen as a 2018 Mahoning County Ohio State Fair participant for his demonstration on Japanese Candy where he was awarded Outstanding of the Day. Marcus enjoys volunteering in a variety of 4-H community service events including doing a “Fair Day” and Bingo at the Victoria House Assisted Living Facility, being the musician for the 4-H Style Revue and volunteering at Cloverbud Day Camp. He is also a volunteer at the AWANA church program where he works with preschool children.

–James Moore, 17, will be a senior this fall at South Range High School. He lives in Canfield with his father and stepmother James and Annie Moore. His mother is Mary Melago. James is a member of the Springfield Booster Boys 4-H Club and he has been in 4-H for nine years. His project areas include market beef, market beef feeder, photography and shotgun. He stays very active by being a representative on the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board, a member of the Boys Scouts of America, volunteering as the photographer for the 4-H Endowment event, a 2017 Mahoning County Outstanding Youth finalist, attending the Ohio Junior Fair Conference, being a Mahoning County representative at the Ohio State Fair project judging, attending the Ohio Forestry and Wildlife Conservation Camp and a member of National Honor Society.

James Moore

–William Reph, 16, will be a senior this fall at Western Reserve High School. He lives in Berlin Center with his parents Steve and Robin Reph. William is a 10-year member of the Western Reserve Rangers 4-H Club where he currently serves as the secretary of the club. His project areas include rabbits, poultry, electricity, public speaking, shooting sports and fishing. He keeps involved in many 4-H activities including attending the Ohio 4-H Youth Conference, being a camp counselor at Camp Whitewood 4-H Camp, a member of the 2017 4-H Royal Court and being a member of the 2018 Ohio Teen Leadership Council. William’s other activities include being a current member of the Mahoning County Junior Fair Board; a member of the Western Reserve Rangers marching, concert, pep, and jazz bands where he serves as the trumpet section leader; National Honor Society; and a member of his church leadership group.
