Salem AMVETS plans breakfast Sunday
SALEM -- The public is invited to breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday at AMVETS Post 45, 750 S. Broadway Ave. The menu offers made to order eggs, french toast, bacon and haystacks. Prices start at $5. Carryouts are available.
Banquet in Salem to feature fried chicken
SALEM -- The Banquet in Salem will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Memorial Building. Next week's sponsor is USA Equipment Solutions. The menu offers fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cole slaw, fresh fruit and vegetables and ice cream sundaes.

Vision 2020 levy meeting set at Crestview
COLUMBIANA -- The Vision 2020 levy meeting of Crestview Local School District begins at 6 p.m. Oct. 10 in the high school cafeteria.
The Board of Education's special meeting to tour Crestview Elementary School starts at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 10 followed by the regular meeting at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center.
Oasis Food Ministry sets October distributions
COLUMBIANA -- The Oasis Food Ministry will distribute food from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 11 and 25 at the First Christian Church, 39 Cherry St. Ages 60 or older may come instead from 10 to 11 a.m. Oct. 25.
Remove decorations at Glenview Cemetery
EAST PALESTINE --All flowers and decorations on graves at Glenview Cemetery must be removed by Oct. 15 or they will be discarded. Fall and winter decorations may be placed beginning Nov. 1.
Activities planned at Salem Library
SALEM - The following programs and activities will be held this month in the Quaker Room at the Salem Public Library.
Brain Games will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 18. This is an opportunity to make new friends while playing board games, dominoes or puzzles. There is no cost to participate.
An interactive video conference program, "Owls Through the Ages" begins at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25, presented by the International Owl Center in Houston, Minn. Attendees will learn how owls are seen in different cultures. Included in the presentation will be an on air visit from one of the live ambassador owls that lives at the center and a question and answer time.
The "Live From Anywhere" series program titled " Rainforest, Layers of Life" is slated from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 8. This interactive video program, to be presented by the Toledo Zoo, will explain what a rainforest is, where they are located, why they are important and what they look, feel and sound like.

Brightside Project plans masquerade ball
SALEM -- The Brightside Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Salem, is hosting its second annual masquerade ball at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Salem Golf Club.
The Brightside Project is devoted to reaching out to give hope to children who have experienced trauma, The event will feature an evening of fine wine, beer, hors d'oeuvres, a mask judging contest, silent and Chinese auctions and music and karaoke provided by Melnick Productions DJ Services.
Some of the items to be auctioned off during the silent auction include an overnight stay and breakfast for two at Spread Eagle Tavern in Hanoverton, admission passes to the Oh Wow! Children's Museum, Pymatuning Deer Park and the Carnegie Museums in Pittsburgh, coach tickets on the Cuyahoga Scenic Railroad and an assortment of gift cards to local restaurants.
"Children in Columbiana County and surrounding communities have experienced trauma, whether it's a battle against hunger, poverty, drug abuse, neglect or complex emotional and mental health issues, they are hurting," said Lisa Wallace, co-director. "Our mission at The Brightside Project is to create and implement events that give hope to these kids which creates in them resiliency and promotes healing. The masquerade ball will help us raise funds to continue our outreach efforts and give hope to these children," she said.

BELOIT - Area residents are invited to breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 21 at Smith Grange, 11090 Beloit-Snodes Road, Beloit. Three Wise Men" dinner planned in North Lima
NORTH LIMA -- The "Three Wise Men" dinner will be served from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 21 at Good Hope Lutheran Church, 12030 Market St. The menu offers cherrywood smoked chicken, kielbasa and pork loin served with homemade rice pilaf, baked beans and cookies for dessert. Dine in or carryout is available.
CAA taking applications for heat, utility assistance
LISBON -- The Community Action Agency is taking applications for State Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) and Percentage of Income Payment Plan (PIPP Plus) at 7860 Lincole Place. Neither program will offer immediate assistance with utility bills.
Applications for State HEAP are available at post offices, libraries, and utility companies throughout the county. Walk in hours are available from 8 a.m to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The programs are income based. Documentation needed: proof of income for the past 30 days for all members of the household who are 18 years or older. This includes proof of disability, child support, wages, Social Security income, pensions, cash assistance, OWF, TANF, odd jobs, self employment, utility assistance check, etc. Households with odd jobs, self employment, and seasonal work must provide 12 months of income. Households that have odd jobs and/or self employment must also provide the most recent IRS tax transcripts. Household members claiming no income may be required to bring an IRS tax transcript or a verification of their non-filing status (IRS at 800-829-1040). The application also requires birth certificates or Social Security cards and birthdates for all household members, as well as a photo ID for the primary applicant. A current gas and electric bill is needed, even if the utility is in the landlord's name. A lease agreement or rent receipt is required when applying along with the landlord's name, address, and phone number. All households receiving rental assistance must provide the most recent HEAP agreement. Making an appointment will not stop a pending disconnection.
