E. Liverpool historian to speak in Salem
SALEM-- The Salem Historical Society meeting on Tuesday will feature "Dark Days: Tales of Disaster, Murder and Mystery In the East Liverpool Area" presented by author Gary Cornell. The meeting is open to the public and will follow a short business meeting at 7 p.m. in the Dale Shaffer Library meeting room. The presentation will take attendees through a few of the true stories of crime and disasters that occurred in the East Liverpool and surrounding area.
Cornell has lived in East Liverpool his entire life. He is retired from the East Liverpool Fire Department where he advanced to the rank of assistant fire chief. A lifelong passion for history has led him to become the unofficial historian for the fire department. His involvement with disasters during his career has served and an inspiration in the writing of this book.
Entrance is off South Lundy Avenue with parking in the Timberlane's parking lot. Guests and members will be greeted by Joan Lora. Refreshments following the program will be provided by Ginger Grilli and Andrew Null. For information contact the society at 330-337-8514.
Stitches in Time to meet at library
SALEM – Stitches in Time, a get-together group for adults who dot string and/or yarn crafting such as knitting, cross stitch and crocheting, will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. March 20 in the Salem Public Library's Quaker Room. Attendees are encouraged to bring a project on which to work. The group is open to the public and free of cost to attend. No registration is required. Prescription drug take-back set in April
LISBON -- As part of the National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, sponsored by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), residents will have the opportunity to drop off their unused, unwanted or expired medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 27 at the East Liverpool City Hospital main entrance, 425 W. Fifth St. and Salem Regional Medical Center Services Building (across from SRMC), 2094 E. State St.
How to Participate
--Area residents will remain in their cars and hand off the unwanted medications to local law enforcement officers, who will be the only staff handling the medications. No requests for identification will be asked.
--Unwanted capsules or tablets may be kept in their original containers or removed from the original container.
--If an original container is disposed, try to remove any personal identifying information from the prescription label.
This one-day medication collection effort is being sponsored by the ADAPT Coalition (330-424-0531), Columbiana County Drug Task Force (330-424-0309) and local law enforcement jurisdictions, Columbiana County Health Department (330- 424-0272), Columbiana County Mental Health & Recovery Services Board (330-424-0195), East Liverpool City Health Department (330-385-7900), Family Recovery Center (330-424-1468), East Liverpool City Hospital (330-385-7200), Salem City Health Department (330-332-1618), Salem Regional Medical Center (330-332-7152), and Heritage Thermal. These organizations are collaborating on this county-wide event to remove potentially dangerous controlled substances from people's homes.
Columbiana County residents can also visit the following locations, open 24/7, to dispose of unwanted medications in a locked medication drop-off box at these police departments, no questions asked:

SCC offering lifeguard training course
SALEM-- The Salem Community Center will be offering an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course from 5 to 8 p.m. weeknights April 8 to 19. Cost is $240 for members and $280 for non-members. Upon completion participants will receive Lifeguard Training, First Aid, Professional Rescuer CPR and AED Essentials certifications. Lisbon kindergarten sign-ups taking place
LISBON-- Parents of children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 30, 2019, may begin to register their children for kindergarten. Parents who have access to a computer can register their children online using the Lisbon School website. Under forms & links across the top of the page, go down the right side to OneView (parent portal) to begin; parents with other children in the system may use their parent ID and password. Parents who do not have access to a computer will be able to register at the Board Office, 317 N. Market St.
Non-residents who wish to apply for open enrollment to the Lisbon kindergarten must be 5 years old by the date set by the district of residence. Registration completion will be made the week of March 25 through 29. Screenings for kindergarten will be held April 30 and May 1. Appointments will be made at the time of registration completion.
Registration for the Lisbon Preschool is also available online. There are a limited number of places available; therefore the 4 year olds will be considered first with 3 year olds taking the remaining spots. For those who do not have access to a computer, the Board Office will have computers available.
Parents/guardians enrolling children in Lisbon schools must bring a photo ID of themselves, the child's original birth certificate, immunization records, proof or residency and custody papers, if applicable.
United Local accepting enrollment apps
HANOVERTON-- The United Local School District is accepting applications for open enrollment students for the 2019-2020 school year.
New students who reside outside the district, but wish to attend United Local on open enrollment status for the 2019-2020 school year may pick up applications between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. beginning March 11 in the superintendent's office at 8143 state Route 9, Hanoverton. All applications must be completed and returned by June 14.
Open enrollment students may have to provide their own transportation. Call the superintendent's office at 330-223-1521 (administrative office) for information.
