Winona Ruritans hold March meeting

WINONA - The Winona Ruritan Club met March 28 at the Winona Friends Church. President Rob Doyle Jr. was working to get electricity back on for individuals after the weekend storm tore down trees and electric lines. Secretary Lee Stamp filled in as president and called the meeting to order, leading the group in the singing of "America." Vice President Homer Althouse gave the Invocation.

Stamp called the roll, with 16 members and 10 guests present. The guests had helped the club make scrapple March 17 at Althouse's home.

Stamp provided the highlights of the February club meeting and March board of directors meeting. Treasurer Bob Doyle Sr. gave the February financial report and preliminary report on the March 18 breakfast where the club sold 212 pans of scrapple. The club cooked over1,200 pounds of sausage patties and sold another 200 pounds, as well as 400 pounds of bulk 1-pound packages and served about 450 people for breakfast. The preliminary figures show the club made enough profit for its planned community donations.

Members and friends are encouraged to patronize Eichler LP Gas and Hull's Super Duper Market as they both made large donations of products to the club.

The club sold all 100 tickets for the March Gun Raffle. Chairman Michael Knoedler asked Tom Richey (who did not buy a ticket) to pull the winning ticket stub. The winner of the "Henry made in America" Big Boy Classic .44 magnum rifle was Jason McDevitt.

Stamp asked Homer Althouse to give his opinion on the scrapple making and breakfast. Althouse said the event went about as good as it could have, although a little more corn meal wouldn't hurt. He thanked everyone for their help, especially the non-members who made the event possible.

Stamp apologized to the members born in February for missing their birthdays - Jason McDevitt, Buster Rogowsky and Homer Huprich - and the club sang "Happy Birthday" to the in addition to the members with March birthdays - Bob Doyle Sr., Fred Pamer, Tom Sanor and Larry Sanor. No guests admitted to having a March birthday.

Stamp said the club's board is always open to suggestions for entertainment. He said he had a couple calls for the Father & Daughter dinner April 25 and Steak Fry June 27.

Stamp also reported on attending the Zone 4 meeting March 23 at the Guilford Lake Ruritan meeting hall. Zone 4 consists of the clubs Great Divide (Mechanicstown), Guilford Lake, Lisbon, West Township, Winona and United Ruriteens. Zone Gov. Jim Means is retiring after 25 years of service and is being replaced by Pat McAleese of the Lisbon club. Ohio District Gov. Dave Wingett congratulated Means on his past and acknowledged his continuing work with the Guilford Lake club. Means was presented with a plaque attesting to his service.

Rogowsky amended his previous motion to include the following donations: $300 to the Hicks & Hayseeds 4-H Club, $300 to the Winona Friends Church, $150 to the Columbiana Soil & Water District, $100 to Homer and Marilyn Althouse for the use of their home and property for making of scrapple and $125 to the Columbiana County Fair Board for purchase of Junior Fair trophies.

The annual father and daughter dinner meeting is scheduled for April 25 in the church gymnasium.
