First Presbyterian to present kirking service on Sunday

SALEM - First Presbyterian Church of Salem will present a "Kirkin' O' The Tartans" service during the 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday, with variations. Kirking is from the Scottish Gaelic word Kirk, which means church. Tartans are the traditional plaid emblems of Scottish clans. The celebration is not limited to Presbyterian churches, but is found in Episcopalian, Methodist, Roman, Catholic, Orthodox and other denominations across the world. First Presbyterian's version of this celebration will include bagpipes, choral music, drum, piano and organ. Part of the service will include a roll call of clans. The intention is to recognize all attendees as Children of God, celebrating everyone's heritage. Attendees can also bring items to be blessed during the service, such as cloth (tartans), pictures or other items representing ancestry.
This service is open to the public and is sponsored in part by the Music Fund of First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Dr. Frank Lewis will preside over the service. Nancy McNeal is organist and pianist. John Krauss is Director of Music.
Kim Meek of Leetonia will be performing on the bagpipes before and during the service. Meek has been studying and performing on the bagpipes for eight years. She currently performs regularly with "North Coast Pipe and Drum" in Kent, the "Steel Valley Pipe and Drum" in Youngstown and the "Celtic Circle Pipe and Drum" in Sharpsville, Pa.
