SHSAA plans for Freed Fest
SALEM - The Salem High School Alumni Association will celebrate the popular Freed Fest all weekend long, Aug. 12-13, during the SHS Alumni Weekend activities. In collaboration with the Downtown Salem Partnership, the alumni association is co-sponsoring music at numerous venues downtown. Grant applications for venues are now available online at the alumni association's website www.salemohioalumni.org. Access the home page and "Weekend Music Payment Agreement."
The SHS Alumni Association Open House is Saturday, Aug. 12, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 330 E. State St., and will feature memorabilia displays, the SHS Art Wall, refreshments and giveaways. Watch for the announcement of a Quaker Sam visit.
The SHS Alumni Night will be held on Sunday night, Aug. 13, at 6 p.m. at Waterworth Memorial Park with music by Jimmy and the Soulblazers. Other activities include a Classic Car Show and the appearance of the nostalgic Frostop Mug. A vendor is available for refreshments, and those attending are reminded to bring their lawn chairs.

Board of Elections to meet
The Columbiana County Board of Elections will meet in special session at 1:30 p.m. today to handle several agenda items, including polling location changes in East Palestine, Lisbon and the city of Salem. Other agenda items include precinct election official reduction in multi-precinct polling locations, result of internal audit for May 2 special election, special election programming, logic and accuracy testing, voter registration deadline and dates for absentee voting.
Salem chamber sets art reception
The Chamber Gallery of Art, located in the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, will be holding an Artist's Reception for Ted Lawson from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday. Lawson is a contemporary watercolor artist who creates art using "the things that people see and use every day" as his inspiration. His ideas involving common everyday scenes or objects spring from his extensive foreign and domestic travels as well as glimpses of New York City. He continuously strives to accomplish the goal of creating something that is entertaining and thought provoking for other people to look at and enjoy. The free event is open to the public and is located at 210 E. State St., Salem, inside the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce.
Salem library hosting musician
Salem Public Library is joining in on the Super Cruise celebration Saturday when Jan Cox of Salem Music Centre will perform Swing music from 5 to 7 p.m. on the new library patio! All are welcome for this free music event,
Volunteers sought for home tour
Salem Ohio Historical Society is hosting a Historic Home and Garden Tour July 7 and 8. The society is seeking several youth groups to sell bottled water for $1 at select sites. Youth groups would purchase and retain money from water sold. Groups could sell on one or both days. Contact Ruth Newman, 330-383-4014, by June 15 for more details.
Western CC museum open
The Western Columbiana Society's historical museum on Homeworth Road in Homeworth will be open every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to noon during June and July. There is no admission charge, but donations are accepted.
