WINONA - The Winona Ruritan Club met May 23 at the Winona Friends Church. President Rob Doyle Jr. called the meeting to order and led the group in singing "America." Vice President Homer Althouse gave the invocation. Caterer Chris Phillis served the meal.
Secretary Lee Stamp called the roll of members with 18 present. He then read the minutes of the April monthly meeting which were approved as read. Treasurer Bob Doyle Sr. gave the March and April treasurer's report which was approved as given.
Tom Sanor is working on coordinating the schedule at the Butler Township Garage so the club can steam clean the interior of its cooking trailer.
There were three members with May birthdays - Bruce Marhefka, Mike Bryan and Paul Lease. Only Marhefka was present and the other club members sang "Happy Birthday" to him.
Doyle Jr. reminded members that the club's annual steak fry is at 7 p.m. June 27 at the Salem Saxon Club. Everyone must bring their own table settings. Guests are welcome. The meal will cost the same as previous years - $16 for tender loin steak and $10 for chicken breast, with reservations in advance. The club will be presenting three college scholarships to the following grandchildren of members: Jaima Howell, granddaughter of Homer Huprich; Nathan Marhefka, grandson of Bruce Marhefka; and Lleyton Uphold, grandson of Richard Stoffer. Awardees eat for free. Entertainment will be Bruce Zimmer of BZ Bees, presenting his "Life of a Honey Bee" program. Rob Donaldson, owner of Horst Meats, will procure the meats. Members will cook the meats and Phillis will prepare the sides.
Doyle Jr. announced the Winona Historical Society's Strawberry Festival will be held June 25 at the 32114 Winona Road location. Food service will begin at 11:30 a.m.
No other business came before the club and the meeting was adjourned. Everyone rose and pledge allegiance to the American flag.
