Smith Grange breakfast
Smith Grange, 11090 Beloit Snodes Road, will host a breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Sunday. Cost is $11 for ages 13 and up, $5 for ages 6-12 and free for ages 5 and under. Dine in or carry out.
Model Aircraft fun fly
The Mahoning County Model Aircraft Club will sponsor a Radio Controlled Aircraft Fun Fly, Exhibition and Swap Meet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Shaker Woods Field, 44337 County Line Road, Columbiana. This event is open to the public with free admission. Food and beverages will be available to purchase and a 50/50 drawing will be held. No drones permitted at Shaker Woods. Sebring schools literacy event
SEBRING -- Sebring Local Schools will hold their second annual "Literacy Under the Lights" community event to spotlight their "Readers are Leaders" initiative at Sebring McKinley's Schaefer-Davies Football Stadium from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday. The community is invited to read books under the lights, participate in educational activity stations and interact with special guests, including Northeastern Ohio author, Sally Kurjan, and her one-eyed rescue dog Bernie, the star of her series, "Bernie the One-Eyed Puppy."
Dispersed across the football field, there will be activity stations focused on literacy and language, led by Sebring McKinley High School athletes and students from the school's clubs and organizations, as well as Sebring staff.
Other special guests will include the Sebring Library's mascot, "Booker the Bear," and Texas Roadhouse mascot "Andy the Armadillo." Participants will also have the opportunity to learn about other library resources available to them.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a book for a book swap, and to drop a new book in the book bin to be distributed to students in the district. All students attending the event will receive a free book, and prizes will be raffled at the event, including a reading nook.
Refreshments will be available at the concession stand, with proceeds benefiting B.L. Miller Partners in Education. The organization puts the funds raised back into events, supplies and resources for students. Students will also have the opportunity to receive purple postcards for displaying and reciting the B.L. promise, "Be responsible, be respectful, be safe and be positive," organized by members of the school's Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports team, which will be in attendance.
"Literacy under the Lights" is made possible through the support of its partners, including Sebring Library, United Way's Success After Six program, Texas Roadhouse, The Josie & Carl Scarpitti Foundation, and local community volunteers. The event is free and open to the public.

Audubon 'Art of Birding'
YOUNGSTOWN - The Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley kicks off its fall 2023 programming Sept. 26 with "The Art of Birding," featuring a presentation and discussion with John Guy Petruzzi. The event is free and open to the public, all are welcome to attend. Guests are invited to arrive at 6:30 p.m. for networking and socializing, and the program will begin at 7 p.m. The event will take place at the Austintown Senior Center, 112 Westchester Drive, Austintown, and guests are asked to use Disabled American Veterans (DAV) entrance to access the building.
Petruzzi is a Youngstown-born artist, educator, photographer and lifelong birder. For this presentation, he will share his enthusiasm for local patch birding, guiding the audience through a year of birds in his home county of Mahoning. Drawing from a portfolio containing tens of thousands of images collected over a decade, a vivid portrait of local birdlife will emerge through a selection of unforgettable moments. From backyard favorites to the spectacular Gyrfalcon of 2021/22, the images will celebrate the adaptability of birds and the importance of habitat conservation. Members of the Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley will be present to discuss upcoming events and opportunities for birders of all ages and levels of experience to get involved with the organization.
Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley is the National Audubon Society chapter of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
