Joy of Christmas hayride
The Columbiana Area Tourism Bureau will present the Joy of Christmas 2023 Hayride & Petting Zoo from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Harvey S. Firestone Recreational Park (entrance by Regal Jewelers). Parking and payment for the hayride is in the pool parking lot. Hayrides feature three jump-on/jump-off stops with wagons rotating along the route throughout the evening. First stop is the petting zoo and gingerbread house; second stop is Santa's ice castle for hot coco, popcorn and cookies ($1 per item), craft and reindeer food making, face painting and photos with Santa; and third stop is the return to the pool parking lot. The hayride will include the Joy of Christmas light show featuring more than one million bulbs. Wristbands cast $5 per person, free for children 3 years and under.
MCCTC campus tours
Mahoning County Career and Technical Center, Adult Career Center, located on Palmyra Road in Canfield, is offering to the public their 2023-2024 Campus Tour events. The first of six dates will be held at 10 a.m. this morning. More events will be held throughout the year including Oct. 17 at 6 p.m., Jan. 17 at 6 p.m., March 12 at 10 a.m., April 17 at 6 p.m. or May 7 at 6 p.m. Featured technical training programs are Welding, Automotive Technology, Medical Assistant, Medical Office Specialist, Firefighter I & II and EMT. MCCTC's financial aid coordinator and Mahoning and Columbiana Training Association will all be on-site to help students and parents learn more about FAFSA and other ways to pay for school. During Campus Tour events, attendees can observe a live class as well. Labs will be open for touring and MCCTC Adult Career Center's student recruiter will be on hand to discuss how to apply. Those who are ready to graduate high school or who have already have a high school diploma are welcome to attend. Individuals wishing to register for this event or other Campus Tour dates can call the MCCTC Adult Career Center office at 330-729-4100. Registration is not required, but appreciated.
Rock painting in Salem
The Salem Public Library and Salem Parks Department are sponsoring Rock Painting: Go Wild in the Park from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Waterworth Memorial Park, next to the Dog Park and Nature Trail. The project will be a community rock snake; all supplies are provided free of cost by Salem Parks Department and Salem Public Library. This program is free of cost and open to all ages. Registration is requested online at the library's website or by calling the library at 330-332-0042 for registration assistance. Use the Sunset Boulevard entrance to the park.
Music at Salem library
The second installment of this year's slate of musicians in Salem Public Library's A Little Live Music at the Library is the dynamic duo of Dave Byers and Jon Volio. These Salem favorites will perform from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday in the Reading Room. This hour-long performance is free of cost and open to all.
OSU Extension wellness program
The Ohio State University Extension is providing a "Gather Your Gratitude" six-week email wellness challenge to learn more about how OSU Extension has tied together a variety of wellness topics related to gratitude. The email challenge connects participants with tips, research and resources to share the ways gratitude can improve one's health. Go to https://go.osu.edu/lhlwcolmaho and answer a few short questions to get registered. During the week of Oct. 23 all registered participants will receive a pre-challenge message. Participants will then receive one email per week through Dec. 11. Participants will have access to optional resources available including the Ohio State University Extension Live Healthy Live Well Blog, a free Wednesday wellness webinar series, and a tracking challenge bingo card. Pre-and post-challenge online surveys will be used to track participant progress and comments. This program is offered free and is sponsored by Ohio State University Extension. SRMC Look Nook book fair
The Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC) Look Nook Gift Shop's Book Fair, which will feature a wide selection of books and seasonal items at discounted prices, will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 16 and 17 inside the Look Nook, located next to the cafeteria on the hospital's ground floor. CWC Lunch & Learn
The Columbiana Women's Club (CWC), a civic organization operating a century house on North Main Street in historic Columbiana, will feature local fine artist Kristen Llewellyn at the Oct. 23 Lunch & Learn. A painter, drawer, photographer and jewelry-maker, Llewellyn is a 2012 Bowling Green State University graduate with a BA in 2-Dimensional Studies, focusing in painting and photography. The fine artist also studied figure drawing and metalsmith work. In 2013, she started making and selling jewelry from her Salem-based art studio. Inspired by her creative family, she's exhibited work in several local galleries, as well as the honorable Toledo Museum of Art: www.KristenLlewellyn.com. Algonquin Mill Fall Festival
The Algonquin Mill Fall Festival is scheduled for Oct. 13, 14 and 15, offering festival-goers a steam-powered flour mill, pioneer village and homemade foods including apple butter, sauerkraut, cookies and bean soup. Kids can visit the petting zoo, have their faces painted and ride the kiddy train. Live entertainment on stage will include cloggers, bluegrass bands, vocal groups and more. Juried craft vendors and antique cars will be on-site. Festival hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The mill complex is located 4 miles south of Carrollton on state Route 332.
