COLUMBIANA - Wreaths Across America, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 290 and the Historical Society of Columbiana and Fairfield Township are looking for military photos of veterans buried in Columbiana Cemetery.
Auxiliary Unit 290 Past President Joyce Allcorn and members have been collecting military photos to place at the veterans grave the week of the service. The 4-inch by 6-inch photos are laminated and placed the week before the annual Wreaths Across America service. This year's annual Wreaths Across America Remembrance Service and wreath laying begins at noon Dec. 16 in the Columbiana Cemetery. The public is encouraged to attend and help.
Wreaths Across America Coordinator, Sherrie Nordquist stated, "The mission of Wreaths across America is to remember, honor and teach. Remember the veteran, honor the memory of each veteran buried and teach your child to do so by saying the name of the veteran with your thanks and be courteous and respectful of the grave. I am proud to say Post 290, the Auxiliary and the community takes this very seriously."
The special photo stake was created by Jeff Guy of Oaks Welding and powder coated at A Plus Powder Coaters Inc. Allcorn asked that people do not take the photos as a souvenir of the day.
Anyone wishing to share their photo of the veteran, a scan of the photo with his service information may be emailed to historicalsociety@columbianaohio.gov. The Archives is open Tuesday mornings 9 a.m. to noon if individuals wish to bring the photo in to be scanned. Individuals may also make arrangements with Historical Society President Deborah Firestone-Himes at 330-727-6384. The Auxiliary deadline for new photos is Nov. 1.
