SALEM - The Salem Historical Society & Museum meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Shaffer Library, 239 S. Lundy Ave., will be followed by the program "Gypsy Queen" presented by Carol Novose, folk artist, local historian and volunteer with the Sharon Historical Society.
Non-members of the society are welcome to attend.
In this lecture guests will hear a tale of a fallen "gypsy" that continues to enchant. Lena Miller, the "Gypsy Queen," came to Sharon, Pa., with the Wallis Brothers Circus in May 1921. The 32-year-old mother of six, a fortuneteller, succumbed to pneumonia and was buried in the local Oakwood Cemetery. She was from a formidable Romany clan; up to 1,000 "gypsies" traveled in to attend the funeral and local spectators brought the crowd to almost 5,000.
Novosel will present details of the event, background of the family and history of the Romany people to make a fascinating cultural journey and story of the times and people.
