Master Gardener open house
The OSU Extension-Mahoning County, 490 S. Broad St., Canfield, will host a Master Gardener Volunteer open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Jan. 16. Master Gardener Volunteers will receive intensive training in horticulture; learn about plants, insects, diseases and more; share passion for gardening with others; assist with educational programs and events; volunteer and continue education as required; and make news friends with a common interest. All-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner
The Franklin Township Fire Department will host an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7 p.m. Dec. 9 at the fire station in Summitville. Cost is $10 for adults and free for children 10 years and under. Santa will be on site from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Seeking applicants for WB schools
The West Branch Local School District Board of Education seeks applicants to fill an unexpired term of board member which will become vacant Jan. 1. The board will be accepting applications through Jan. 5. Interested applicants must contact Adam Fisher, West Branch treasurer, and express interest in writing. Applicants can contact Fisher at Adam.fisher@wbwarriors.org. The board of education may conduct interviews and must name a replacement within 30 days of the vacancy occurring. The newly appointed member will serve until Jan. 1, 2028. If the appointed member desires to continue serving, he or she must run in the next general election. According to Ohio law, people serving on Ohio school boards must be district residents, registered voters in the district and at least 18 years old. Bryan Hobbins, West Branch Local School board president, said the board will review all applications, interview candidates and decide on the replacement at its January organizational meeting.
OH WOW meeting
The OH WOW Center for Science & Technology will hold its annual meeting from noon to 2 p.m. Dec. 14 in the Thomas Ballroom at the Tyler History Center. The event will include a program on the center's 2023 Impact Report, providing a comprehensive review of the highlights and achievements throughout the year. The meeting will not only celebrate past successes but also cast a gaze into the future, presenting ambitious plans for 2024. Tickets cost $25 and include a lunch. CWC Holiday Home Tour 2023
The Columbiana Women's Club (CWC) will host its Holiday Home Tour 2023 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 16. Guests can enjoy both Collections & Cookies at the Columbiana Women's Club and a self-guided tour of six area homes decked in holiday decor: Angels We Have Heard on High, Leetonia; Santa, Trees & All the Trimmings, Leetonia; Holiday Trees with Themes, Columbiana; A Homespun Christmas, Columbiana; An Evergreen Christmas, Columbiana; and Christmas Collections, Columbiana. Cost is $20 per person; tickets available for advance purchase at Willows by Wehr, Sitler The Printer and through the Columbiana Women's Club; day-of tickets available at Columbiana Women's Club only. Proceeds benefit the CWC.
Leetonia toy and food drive
The Leetonia Police Department is assisting local Leetonia families with their Christmas needs with a toy and food drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 13 at the Leetonia Street Department, sponsored by the police department, St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Leetonia Public Schools. All items will be given to St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Leetonia School District for distribution to the families. Toys should be new and unwrapped. Food should be non-perishable. No monetary donations will be accepted.
Adult Cooking classes
Next up in Salem Public Library's winter schedule of Adult Cooking classes, participants will make Holiday Appetizers. Working collectively with others, patrons will make BBQ meatballs and creole salad. The first session will be held Dec. 13 and the second Dec. 20, both from 6 to 8 p.m. This program is free of cost and open to the public. Advanced registration is required and can be completed on the library's website at www.salempubliclibrary.org; for assistance with registration, call the library at 330.332.0042. As a means of maximizing patron participation, registration is limited to one event per person. For those who want to take their appetizers home should bring containers suitable for transporting them.
Salem Library Book Discussion
The Salem Public Library Book Discussion at 2 p.m. Dec. 12 will feature "The Last Mona Lisa" by Jonathan Santlofer, which is about fictional art historian Luke Perrone as the great-grandson of Vincenzo Peruggia who learns his great-grandfather stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre and becomes obsessed with the painting's history. No registration is required.
Salem Community Pantry fundraiser
Salem Community Pantry will hold a fundraiser night at Coaches Burger Bar on State Street in Salem from 5 to 9 p.m. Dec. 6. Present a flyer for the fundraiser, which can be found the Salem Community Pantry's Facebook page. Coaches Burger Bar will donate 15% of total sales to the pantry.
Winterize Your Diet program
Lepper Library will host Winterize Your Diet presented by Audrey Dimmerling of the OSU Extension-Columbiana County at 1 p.m. Dec. 5. Learn about cooking with fresh ingredients to boost energy level and mood. Dimmerling will share how to incorporate the fruits and produce available during the colder months into diets. Examples will be provided.
