'Traitor King' book
discussion at Salem Library
The Salem Public Library book discussion from 2 to 3 p.m. Feb. 13 will feature Andrew Lownie's "Traitor King." Multiple copies of book discussion books are available in the library. Registration is not required. A dual portrait of the British Duke and Duchess of Windsor's glittering lives after the Duke, King Edward VIII, abdicated the throne to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Biographer Lownie explains that as World War ll loomed, the British government saw the Duke of Windsor as an aimless security risk due to his befriending Nazi sympathizers. After appealing to Prime Minister Winston Churchill for an assignment, the Duke was appointed Governor of the Bahamas where he tried to shut down the murder investigation of a close friend. Universally described as ambitious the Duchess was extravagant and demanding of her staff while trapped in a marriage she never wanted. The couple were, in their day, the most glamorous exiles in the world. They were spoiled, selfish people, obsessed with their image. Drawing upon previously unexplored archives Lownie dramatically shows how their glittering world was riddled with treachery and betrayal. And, why the royal family never forgave the Duke for choosing love over duty.
