Soup fundraiser
Community Day Camp of North Lima will be holding a "Grab & Go" soup fundraiser from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 27 at Calvary United Methodist Church, 12062 South Ave. in North Lima. Drive up and choose soup or preorder by calling Mt. Olivet UCC at 330-549-2169 or Calvary UMC at 330-549-2588 with soup order before Jan. 24. Choices of soup are Baked Potato, Vegetable Beef, Tomato Basil, French Onion, Stuffed Pepper, Mushroom Rice, Corn Chowder and Broccoli Cheese. The cost is $8 per quart. All proceeds benefit the day camp program. There will also be the Day Camp Cookbook "From Our Table to Yours" available at a cost is $12.
Bear Scavenger Hunt
Children's January Programming at Lepper Library include a Bear Scavenger Hunt in the library in which one winner will get a teddy bear and a delicious teddy bear themed snack; Mean Girls Trivia Game in which guests can stop by the teen department and complete a Mean Girls trivia game, turn in their completed trivia sheet and get a Mean Girls inspired sticker; and a Take & Make Craft – Coffee Filter Snowflakes in which guests can stop by the circulation desk and ask for the craft kit to go.
OSU scholarships
The Ohio State University Alumni Club of Columbiana County is again this year presenting five scholarships of $1,000 each to in-coming freshman who will be attending OSU main campus, ATI or a branch campus in the fall. To qualify, the student must attend high school in Columbiana County or live in Columbiana County. They must also have applied to Ohio State, but not yet necessarily been accepted. To apply for the scholarship, students must go to ScholarshipUniverse (https://osu.scholarshipuniverse.com) and complete the application by Feb. 1. Awardees will be selected by the local Alumni Club Scholarship Committee based on academic merit, school and community involvement, and interest in and positive attitude toward OSU.
Rodman Chess Club
ALLIANCE -- Rodman Public Library's newest monthly program - Rodman Chess Club - will be held every third Wednesday of every month, chess boards will be set up in the auditorium at the Main Library for those who play and are looking for an opponent, those who sort of play and are looking to learn more about the classic game, or for those who are interested in getting started.
"I'm excited to have this program come to fruition," said Byrun Reed, a reference librarian who will facilitate the program. "For the past six or seven months, we have had a passive chess program going on and there seems to be some interest."
Midway through the year, Reed set up a chess board on a table in the reference department and placed a sign stating "Your Move."
Patrons would take turns moving pieces around the board to keep a game going. Eventually, patrons started to play entire matches against each other.
That gives Reed some hope that the Rodman Chess Club will be a popular program among players of all skill levels.
"There was a lot of activity around that board," said Reed. "It was a good way to gauge if there were people who were looking for other chess enthusiasts or those would be interested in learning to play."
Reed will host the inaugural meeting of the Rodman Chess Club on Wednesday, Jan. 17 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Although it is called a club by name, there is no formal membership and no registration is needed to attend the monthly sessions. Open to all ages, the only requirement is that those attending have an interest in chess.
Reed describes himself as a "novice" chess player and says he will not be on hand to necessarily teach people how to play, although there will be experienced players in attendance who will be able to help explain the game.
"The idea is to provide a place where people can come together to play chess and explore the game and learn together," said Reed.
ONEF scholarships
PATASKALA, Ohio -- The Ohio Natural Energy Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2024 scholarship program. This program has awarded nearly 650 scholarships since 2007. This $640,000 investment has assisted young Ohioans interested in pursuing careers in the natural gas and oil industry get an education. Students can receive the $1,000 scholarship for a total of four years upon renewal.
Applications are being accepted through March 1.
Scholarships are awarded to Ohio students interested in careers such as petroleum engineer, finance, equipment operator, mechanical engineer, welder and many more. The scholarships can be used to attend an accredited college, university, technical or trade school and requires the student to maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
"We are thrilled to invest in the future of Ohio's natural gas and oil industry. There are so many incredible opportunities available and this scholarship will support those who are interested in joining the men and women who keep the lights on across Ohio," said Bruce Tague, Executive Director of the Ohio Natural Energy Foundation. "Last year we were able to award 39 students a total of $39,000 in scholarships."
Since 2007, the foundation has awarded 381 individual students a scholarship to pursue careers in the natural gas and oil industry. These past winners have represented 59 different colleges, universities, technical or trade schools, and include 63 different majors, degrees, or certificate programs.
