'Burchfield's Footsteps'

The April 9 program of the Salem Historical Society & Museum will be presented at the Shaffer Library, located at 239 S. Lundy Ave. at 7 p.m. Non-members of the society are welcome to attend. Following a short business meeting, the program, "Burchfield's Footsteps - Historical Connection of Charles Burchfield to Salem, Ohio," will be presented by Cheryl Mattevi, curator of Burchfield Homestead Society Museum. Mattevi is a Salem native and a professional geologist, with a concentration in the connection of land use and water quality, and a heart for native wildflowers. Her love for Burchfield began as a chance visit to the Columbus exhibition North by Northwest, where she learned that Charles Burchfield tramped through the same woods and swamps that she did, and made exuberant landscapes that celebrated Little Beaver Creek and the wildlife and wildflowers of rural Salem. In this lecture guests will explore a few of those landscapes as well as the many images of Salem buildings about 1917, following Burchfield's footsteps around his Salem neighborhood and nearby forests and swamps. This lecture is a precursor to our inaugural "Burchfield's Salem" Trolley Tour also highlighting the artwork of Charles Burchfield schedule for April 13. Reservations are still available. Tuber Sale at
Boardman Park
The Mahoning Valley Dahlia Society will hold its annual Tuber Sale April 14 at Boardman Park's Elton Beard Cabin from 1 to 3:30 p.m. All sizes, colors and Dahlia forms will be sold by society members who will answer planting and growing questions as well as assist with selection of tubers. Follow the signs at the state Route 224 and Southern Boulevard entrances of Boardman Park to the sale site.
