COLUMBIANA - Area Pizza venues will vie for the title of Best Pizza in Columbiana from 4:30 to 7 p.m. April 30 in the Columbiana High School Commons, 700 Columbiana-Waterford Road. The event is being sponsored by The Historical Society of Columbiana and Fairfield Township and Columbiana Christian Ministerial Association with proceeds for "Fix the Sticks."
Competing for the championship are Columbiana entries Bellaria, Foxx Pizza Den, Pizza Joes at Tic Toc, and R Pizza Place. East Palestine entries are Cozza's Pizza and Ianzone's Pizza by Coulters and Lisbon will be represented by Italo's and Mary's Pizza.
Tickets are available Tuesday evening at the west side gymnasium entrance. Tickets are $12 adults, $10 seniors and $6 for children 12 and under. The ticket includes eight tasting tickets and water. Soft drinks and bottled water are available for purchase.
In addition to the Pizza Challenge, 30 baskets have been donated to the Chinese Basket Raffle. A sheet will be $10 with chances to win. People do not need to participate in the pizza challenge to purchase tickets for the raffle.
Ticket holders will vote the Peoples Choice award. A panel of local judges will participate in a blind test tasting awarding ribbons for best Pepperoni Pizza and best Specialty Pizza. The judges are Columbiana City Manager Lance Williard, Columbiana Mayor Rick Noel, Columbiana High School students Colin Pasco and Connor McCusker, Joshua Dixon Elementary Principal Dr Kim Sharshan, Crestview guidance counselor Kayla Sidell, Columbiana firefighter,Sean Stryfeller, Midway Mennonite Pastor Matthew Peterson and J.D. Creer, executive editor of the Morning Journal, Salem News and The Review.
Proceeds from the Pizza Challenge will benefit the Historical Society's special projects committee "Fix the Sticks." The historic 1890 stick-style chapel located in the Columbiana Cemetery is entering its final phase - the interior. The estimated cost of the final phase is $50,000. The restoration contractor is Jim Santini, builder. Donation's of any amount can be written to the "City of Columbiana" with Fix the Sticks in the memo line.
