Cancer Support Group
Community members facing the challenges of a cancer journey can gain encouragement and understanding of this disease during a free support group hosted by University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center at Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC). The group's next monthly meeting will be held from 3 to 4 p.m., Friday in SRMC's Oncology Conference Room, located on the hospital's second floor, past the Cancer & Infusion Center on the left-hand side. SRMC's Cancer Support Group is open to anyone in the community in cancer treatment and cancer survivors. Sessions offer education and emotional support for people with any type of cancer. Attendees are asked to check in at the Oncology Department front desk before entering the meeting. There is no cost to participate, but pre-registration for the meetings is required. about Pollinator Gardens'
The Columbiana Women's Club (CWC), a civic organization operating a century house at 121 N. Main St. in historic Columbiana, will present the second session of the 2024 Garden Events at Idabelle Firestone's Gathering Place & Garden, featuring recognized landscape architect Cindy Tyler sharing "What's the Buzz about Pollinator Gardens," June 6 in Harvey S. Firestone Recreational Park, 338 E. Park Ave. RSVPs required. Tickets are $25 per person with lunch (served at noon); $15 per person program-only (12:30 p.m. start time). Sponsored by Columbiana Women's Club, Green Thum Garden Club and Firestone Park Cultural & Custodial Committee, the second session in the series features Tyler, Terra Design Studios, sharing details on designing gardens to attract and support pollinators such as bees, butterflies and birds by while adding natural beauty to home gardens. In keeping with her goal of designing gardens that reunite people to the natural cycles of the earth, Tyler's extensive background includes master planning and design of public gardens, open spaces and higher education teaching landscapes through 45 commissions in more than 20 states. She is also recognized as a leader among her peers for her family garden designs. Locals can experience her exceptional work in the recently restored Harvey S. Firestone Recreational Park, Columbiana. Parking is available in the Firestone Pool lot. This site is handicap accessible; transportation from parking lot to Idabelle's Gathering Place provided (golf cart).
Small group for those experiencing grief, loss
A new sharing-based small group designed for those experiencing grief or loss, however they seek to define it, starts Monday, May 20, at 3 p.m. and continues for six weeks, with Memorial Day off, at First Presbyterian Church, 28 E. Park Ave., Columbiana. This small group will use THE HUB's method of creating non-judgmental space for the sharing of stories to allow those who are grieving to share what they are feeling and be heard. Group will include scripture and prayer but will not be proscriptive. Group facilitators will not tell anyone what they should be feeling or thinking. It is a joint program of Columbiana HUB, First Presbyterian, Columbiana and Celebrating Seniors. More information is available at columbianahub.org.
