SEBRING - For the past two years, The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley's Success After 6-After School Program has provided additional support and resources to foster learning and growth for students in K-6 at Sebring Local's B.L. Miller Elementary School. The After School Program has wrap-around services to help break down barriers many students and their families faced.
In continuing with The United Way's focus on the whole child and family, B.L. Miller Elementary School has had the opportunity to offer their students the summer learning three-week-long program from May 28 through June 14. It includes accelerated learning, literacy, workforce readiness, and overall student wellness. Also included are assessment interventions in math, reading, and science, STEM/STEAM activities, and Ohio Learns 360-Camp in a Box (Wild for Ohio, Be Creative, Math is Art, and Nature Camp).
Students also have the opportunity to spend time at Sebring Parks during a "Nature Camp," exploring hands-on science and art projects, as well as partaking in a community-based service project of the park's revitalization. Students also learn about water safety, pool rules and enjoy swimming at the Sebring Pool.
"Through our students' participation in the summer learning program, the goal is to decrease summer learning loss, further improve student's academic achievements, all while offering unique enrichment activities," said Jill Dennis, Sebring Local Schools Family Engagement coordinator and Success After 6 coordinator. "We're grateful to be able to offer this experience to our students and their families."
Through community enrichment partnerships and district-aligned tutoring, including teacher instruction and interventions in math and reading, the district has been able to provide opportunities for students to focus on the Ohio Department of Education priority areas, including accelerated learning, literacy, workforce readiness, and overall student wellness.
