SR 172 closing
changed to April 7
The closure for the state Route 172 culvert replacement project will now begin April 7. State Route 172 will close east of New Garden near Guilford Lake between Lakeview Road and Woodale Drive for a culvert replacement project. The closure duration is 21 days. In addition to the culvert, the project involves replacing the pavement, guardrail, and realigning the ditch. The detour during the closure is state Route 9 south to U.S. Route 30 east, and reverse. The overall project completion date is Oct. 31.
Friends of the Banquet to host Banquet in Salem
Friends of Banquet will sponsor the Dine In or Drive Thru Banquet in Salem from 5 p.m. until the food is gone Monday at the Salem Memorial Building. The menu will include meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, applesauce, fresh vegetables and fruit, and cookies. Dine in will park in designated area behind the building and proceed to front door. Drive thru will line up in lot behind the building; one meal per person in the vehicle. McArtor Scholarship
applications available
Application forms for the annual Mona McArtor Scholarship given by the Quota Club of Salem are available in the guidance offices at the following local high schools: Salem, Beaver Local, Lisbon, Louisville, Sebring and West Branch. This scholarship was established in 1978 as an ongoing memorial to Miss McArtor, a deceased member and past president of the club. The scholarship is valued at $500. The scholarship is awarded each year to a student going into an undergraduate or graduate level program and pursuing a career in Speech/Language Pathology and/or Audiology or Deaf Education. Applications may also be requested by calling Ann Smith at 330-831-1019. The completed scholarship application and two faculty reference letters are due no later than May 5. All students who meet eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply. The scholarship is awarded in early June.
Lisbon Lepper Library National Library Week
Upcoming programming for Lepper Library in Lisbon includes National Library Week April 6 through 12 with the theme Drawn to the Library. Patrons can use their library card during this week to received a gift. Patrons can also visit the circulation desk and share their best guess for a chance to win the guessing jar. Other upcoming events include Evening Storytime at 6 p.m. Monday, with special guests from the David Anderson High School Spanish Club reading books with the children. A craft and snack will be provided.
OSU Extension-Mahoning offering food safety training
OSU Extension - Mahoning County is offering ServSafe® training sessions for 2025, designed to equip food service professionals with essential food safety knowledge and certifications. The ServSafe® program delivers comprehensive, up-to-date instruction on all aspects of food handling--from receiving and storage to preparation and service. Participants who successfully complete the course and examination will earn a Certificate of Completion from ServSafe® and a Certification in Food Protection from the Ohio Department of Health, meeting the standards set by the Ohio Revised Code 3701-21-25 for Level II Certification in Food Protection Manager Certification. Cost is $200 (cash or check only). Fee includes course instruction, materials, and exam. Upcoming 2025 Classes include: May 12: Exam from 9 a.m. to noon; June 9: Class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; June 16: Class resumes at 9 a.m., Exam at 1 p.m.; July 28: Exam from 9 a.m. to noon; Aug. 11: Class from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Aug. 18: Class resumes at 9 a.m., exam at 1 p.m. Attendance at the entire training session is mandatory to be eligible for the exam.To register or obtain further details, visit go.osu.edu/servsafe2025. Blood screenings
at SRMC-Canfield
On Saturday, April 26, area residents are invited to learn more about their health by participating in a comprehensive blood screening provided by Salem Regional Medical Center (SRMC) and SRMC Primary Care-Canfield. The screening event will take place at SRMC Primary Care in Canfield, located at 5002 Millennial Lane at the corner of Route 224 and Palmyra Road. Comprehensive blood screenings can help to identify many health problems in their early stages, when they are most treatable, and may detect conditions such as high cholesterol, anemia, infections, diabetes and other disorders. Some of the tests included are cholesterol, lipids and triglycerides, red and white blood cells, platelets, electrolytes, enzymes, blood sugar, BUN and creatinine, bilirubin and thyroid function. Cost of the comprehensive screening is $50. Optional tests available for an additional charge include a prostate specific antigen test for $15; an HgA1c diabetes screening for $30; and a Vitamin D screening for $30. A lipid panel, which measures cholesterol levels and is included in the comprehensive screening, is available as a stand-alone test for $15. Screenings begin at 7 a.m. and an appointment is required. Twain by Two scheduled at Minerv's Roxy
The Minerva Community Charitable Fund presents the Largely Literary Theater Company's Twain by Two in a special fundraising event on Saturday, April 12, 7 p.m., at the Roxy Theatre. The two-act collection of material by Mark Twain is performed by the Largely Literary Theater Company's co-founders Mark Dawidziak and Sara Showman.
Dawidziak, an internationally recognized Mark Twain scholar, has been portraying the iconic American author on stage for 46 years. Showman plays pretty much everybody else in the show that features excerpts from Huckleberry Finn and Eve's Diary. There also are selections on politics and "Curing a Cold."
Dawidziak and Showman have taken their Twain show to more than 75 Ohio communities and several states, including New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, California, New Jersey, Maryland and Michigan. No less an authority than Ken Burns has said, "Nobody gets Mark Twain the way Mark Dawidziak does."
The Minerva Community Charitable Fund, a 501(c)3, was established in 2004 and provides grant funds to support a wide variety of projects benefiting the Minerva area. All proceeds from the event will support the work of programs and organizations that are making Minerva a better place to live and work.
Tickets for the event are $50 per person or $75 per couple and include hors d'oeuvres and desserts. Reservations should be paid in advance by April 7 by check payable to MCCF and mailed to 203 N. Market St., Minerva, OH 44657, or online at https://tinyurl.com/Twain-Tickets.
