Underground RR tours

The Salem Historical Society announced the return of its popular Underground Railroad tours, beginning with the first tour scheduled for Monday, Aug. 18, from 10 to 11 a.m. Additional tour dates will be announced soon and shared on the Society’s website (salemhistoricalsociety.org), the Salem News Calendar, and VisitSalemOhio.com.

The Quakertown Trolley Tour transports passengers back to the late 1850s. A knowledgeable docent will guide the experience, sharing stories about the Underground Railroad, the plight of runaway slaves, and Salem’s pivotal role in the abolitionist movement before the Civil War.

Although the homes featured on the tour are private and not open for entry, interior images and historical details will be shown on a screen inside the trolley. These visual aids offer a glimpse into secret hiding places and highlight the lives of the abolitionists who lived in–or visited–these historic homes.

Tours begin at the Salem Historical Society’s facility at 239 S. Lundy Ave. and last approximately 60 minutes. Free municipal parking is available directly across the street.

The Gift Shop will be open before and after the tour.

Tickets are $15 per person, payable by cash or major credit card upon arrival, prior to boarding.

To reserve a seat, call 330-337-8514. Calls will be returned to confirm a reservation. A minimum of 15 guests is required per tour. Walk-ons are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis after reservations are honored.
