EAST LIVERPOOL — A host of fall activities are being held in Pioneer Village in Beaver Creek State Park in the coming weeks.
Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, the popular Frontier Living Program will be back. Seventeenth century reenactors will give visitors a hands-on experience of life in the pioneer days. A blacksmith will be demonstrating his trade and explaining why it was so important. Learn calligraphy with a quill pen and ink. Learn how fabric was dyed and what was used to dye it with. Learn about fur trading and check out the pelts. Visit a canoe camp, be part of a militia drill and watch and listen to the cannon and musket demonstration. The reenactors are always ready and willing to answer questions.
On Sunday, there will be a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon in the barn pavilion. The menu includes buttermilk pancakes and sweet blue corn pancakes made with blue corn stone ground in Pioneer Village’s Gaston’s Mill. Those pancakes can be topped with a variety of homemade syrups: blueberry, peanut butter, vanilla butter, cinnamon roll or maple syrup. On the side is sausage, Mississippi Sun grits, a grit casserole made with cream cheese, Swiss cheese and ham or sweet coconut grits served with a cinnamon apple topping. Drinks include a variety of juices or coffee. The cost is $10 for adults and $4 for children 6 and under.
Pioneer Day will be on Oct. 4. The event includes craft and merchandise vendors, activities and demonstrations in Pioneer Village and food vendors.
The last pancake breakfast of the year will be on Oct. 19 and Trunk or Treat to celebrate Halloween will be held on Oct. 25.
