Aktion Club hosting drive to benefit animal shelters
SALEM — The Aktion Club of Columbiana County is holding a drive to benefit the Columbiana County Dog Pound and the Columbiana County Humane Society. The club is collecting cleaning products, pet supplies and food through Dec. 19. People may take items to Lib’s Market, 474 E. State St., or Print Works of Salem, 409 E. Second St.
Shirley Bowald, Aktion Club advisor and Community Inclusion and Employment Manager for the Columbiana County Board of Developmental Disabilities, said the drive came to fruition after members learned the local animal shelters are filled to capacity and because of that, there is a great need for supplies to care for the animals housed there.
Cindy Harrold, Aktion Club president, who loves animals, said the service project is a great way for people to help local animals in need. “The animals really really need the things we are collecting. I dearly love animals, so I am happy to help wherever I can,” she said. Harrold reports the project is going well so far, and the group has already met their first goal of collecting blankets and towels.
The shelters have requested the following specific items:
— Purina One dog food, Purina cat and dog chow;
— Canned dog food, any brand;
— Canned chicken to entice scared dogs to eat if they refuse food;
— Cleaning products including Mr. Clean and Odo Ban floor cleaners, bleach and Lysol wipes;
— Non-scented clumping cat litter;
— Sturdy dog toys that can be chewed;
— Pupperoni or other soft treats.
— Milk Bones and other hard treats are not needed at this time.
